So they hire a former model (with a degree in anthropology and archaeology) to look pretty next to Tony Robinson, lose half of the show's experts, and Mick Aston (he of the unruly hair and fantastic jumpers), quits in disgust.

Way to go Channel 4!

How is it dumbing down if she "has a degree in anthropology and archaeology from Cambridge University"?

Sexism at its finest.

It's dumbing down if half of the experts won't be on the show anymore. And it's Mick Aston's interpretation of Channel 4's decision making criteria...
Quote:

...show's producers’ plans to seek a new female co-presenter who 'does not have to be overly experienced or knowledgeable as we have plenty of expertise within the existing team' and also what he thought were plans to 'cut down the informative stuff about the archaeology'.
that indicate the dumbing down, not necessarily the gender of the presenter.

I'm sorry to say I think Prof. Mick has been spitting his dummy out of the pram on this one.  I caught Sunday's episode and I thought Mary-Ann was a good addition to the team. She certainly has a rapport with other members, not least Phil Harding.

I think the "former model" tag is extremely unfair, as she's only taking the role that archaeologists Carenza Lewis, Helen Geake and Brigid Gallagher have taken in previous series (the informed foil to Tony Robinson's asker-of-stupid-questions).
