I noticed on the Trek BBS and Digital Fix forums that Paramount are releasing a test disc with four episodes to see how well it does. They're going back to the original film elements for the episodes for the HD source, and recompositing special effects shots (originally done on NTSC video) to get them up to modern standards. It's effectively doing post production on all the episodes from the beginning.
Test images have surfaced...

HD does the human face no favours, and increases the profits of the botox industry.
Paramount have confirmed Season 1 for later in 2012.

There are a number of shows made in the mid-to-late 1980s through the 1990s which were shot on film and then all postproduction - editing, effects etc. - were done in video. ST:TNG is probably the most problematic technically, but shows like Diagnosis Murder look frightful as well. The images that have "leaked" look a damn sight better than the show would have simply upscaled. I'll reserve judgement until the test disc comes out.

Well, I have to say that to date I haven't bought much ST:TNG (only Season Seven) for exactly the same reason. Although ST:TNG reinvented the franchise, it took a while to get into its stride (Season Four, IIRC) and did a fair number of stinkers in its time. There were a few authentic classic episodes, but I'm not sure I'd want to wade through the dross for the handful of diamonds hidden within.
I think Geordi and his technobabble stories let the show down. It was at its best thinking outside the envelope - stuff like Time's Arrow, All Good Things, The Inner Light, and The Chase.
I think when the Star Trek grandees got obsessed with Starfleet the franchise got into trouble. There's more to British culture than the Royal Navy.

I've been watching Season 1 again recently, and the more I think about it, the more that I realise that this show won't be viable on HD without some serious Lucasing, beyond just going back to the film elements and redoing the effects.
CGI will have to be applied to real, in camera elements as well to make them viable in HD. For one thing, watching the episodes with overscan turned off shows that these episodes were made in a long ago age where the edge of the screen hid a multitude of sins. Watching Lonely Among Us yesterday revealed a boom mike hanging in shot in one scene. And the opening sequence, where the E goes to warp at the end of the credits, there's a black rectangular shadow cut into the bottom of the screen where the effects don't reach.
And then there is the make up and costume effects, the beast aliens may look adequate in NTSC SD, but the seams will definitely show at higher resolution, as will the uneveness of Brent Spiner's yellow make-up, the edges of Worf's latex forehead appliance. You can see the hints of them in NTSC, they'll be blindingly obvious in HD. As for the blandness and simplicity of the sets. They had to enrich them considerably when they made the Generations movie, the reason why will become obvious now.
Now if there was one show that I'd like to have the HD makeover, it's the X Files. Those episodes were mini-movies in the first place, shot on film just like TNG and transferred to video. They would look stunning on Blu as they are 'real world' shows

More than happy with remastered DVD's of TOS, never really got that much into TNG to get the bug for it...
