The problem is Choagy you are doing more harm then good, when you feed these wild critters they are not eating what nature intended there are plants out there festooned with caterpillars and other harmful insects that nature intended Mr bird to eat, they don't get eaten because Mr Bird is bloated out on your bird food the result then is the plant dies and this results in a knock on effect for other wildlife, bit like people that feed hedgehogs on cat meat and then wonder why the plants in their gardens are being decimated by slugs, ....And we could talk about all the carbon foot print of transporting this grain around the country. I tell you Bill Odie and Blue Peter have a lot to answer for........
All the best and looking forward to the next ice age

Lots of advice on feeding birds here on the RSPB website.
Interesting that it states that birds cannot get all the nutrition they need from birdfood so still eat worms etc.
Also advice on when not to leave out certain foods as they may be harmful to chicks in certain circumstances.

Could someone please

That may have been the case but as so many gardens are now plant free and merely grass or patioed the sparrows/ starlings/blackibirds do actually need to have their diet supplemented as a helluva lot of their naturall diet is missing. Hedge Sparrows are actually on the brink of being classed as an in danger species so I will continue to do my bit.
