From the original post, if your budget is £600, then I'd recommend the Nikon D90 with 18-105 kit lens.
Best buy selling them for 606 (subject to availability)

Canon EOS 600D with 18-55mm lens is on the list for today's Amazon lightning sale. No price yet but currently listed for £599.

Item starts at 3pm today. Open the site at 3:01 and already all sold and number 250 on the waiting list.. Price is £499 but clearly no chance of getting one.

EDIT: well, **** me, I just went to Amazon to look at something completely different and had a small notification popup saying that it was in my basket for the next 2 minutes, so bagged me one. I normally get myself a christmas present that would be too much to ask anyone else to get so that is covered now.
