Yeah I've seen those pics in the link I posted up earlier. I think it looks pretty good. ![]()
Not sure about the button thing. At first I thought I'll probably be OK with it, but on second thoughts I can imagine it being a right pain having those buttons in the same location as the Firefox buttons. Lots of accidental browser closing will occur no doubt! I'll probably switch it round. I'm pretty sure the missus won't like them there anyway.
Hope they put a wee thing in to make the switch easy. I don't much fancy dicking about in GConf-Editor to fix it...

your link just showed the "new" logo, mien showed screenshots
I'm more interested in the every growing popularity of lxde, there's clearly a lot of ppl out there who
a) want to use old functional hardware with a new OS
b) want their new hardware to run to it's full (as in fastest) potential
Distrowatch story on openSUSE adding it
new Knoppix is out, Knoppix switched to lxde a few releases ago and is really good as a livecd, super fast and functional ![]()
and the long rumored Lubuntu looks like it should be ready and official in time for 10.4
Mint also has an lxde version coming out soon.
I'm quite a fan of lxde, as limited playing with it, it does seem to do a good job of mixing both worlds, functionality/looks of gnome/kde, but speed of flux etc.
If you scroll to the bottom of the post I linked to, it takes you to the wiki with all those pics. Not my fault you didn't read the thing. So double

Just been reading about Lubuntu in this month's Linux Format mag. Sounds like another option for our seemingly forgotten Asus Eee 701. Nobody loves it except me. If Lubuntu is any good, it's going on. I keep hearing very good things about LXDE.

just tried the lubuntu 10.04 alpha 3. It's pretty crappy, even for an alpha ![]()
using PII450
livecd ran like a dead dog
installed it anyway, wouldn't boot, checked / using a livecd and /boot etc hadn't got created!
installed it again, and it ran, slightly better than livecd.
it uses Chrome rather than firefox which seems super slow, I mean jerky mouse slow just moving mouse across a page!
doesn't seem alpha to me, barely usable on this pC, may try later on proper desktop!
Nuts. ![]()
Ah well, maybe this time next year it'll be worth looking at. Shame though.
My bloody graphics card fan is making a vibrating noise at boot up. It lasts for about 30 seconds to a minute, usually until an OS is loaded up, then goes. This means the fan is on it's way out doesn't it? I've only had it a few weeks! Back to Amazon I suppose...

i think Lucid is due out in a month or so isn't it?
in any case, now downloading
Linux Mint 8 “Helena” LXDE RC1 released!
Regarding fan etc, run it with the case off to see if anything sometimes hits it? maybe a cable bumps against it, which only makes a bad nice when fan goes fast?
Also that way you'll be able to see if it is speed related. I think in Windows (not sure about Linux, maybe under wine?) you can get utilities which show span feeds, and let you control them etc. I'm not really into all that stuff, someone like ogster would probably know though.
Yeah, I've had the side off. At first I thought it was the PSU, since it was quite a strong vibration, but on close examination it's the graphics card's fan, and no, there's nothing rubbing against it.
The speeds seems to be OK, well, the temps are fine and everything's working alright, just the noise at boot until it "warms up" a bit.
I'll give it a week or so, see how it looks, and if it gets any worse I'll have to send it back to Amazon. Bummer. ![]()

Seems a while ago now, did you get to the bottom of it?
I've breathed new life into the PII 450 again ![]()
tried lubuntu, no good. tried Mint LXDE, good as a distro, but not for pii 450.
installed Slitaz, new version and it's good ![]()
i wanted to stick to debian/ubuntu for wealth of apps/support, but apart from moblock, slitaz has what I've wanted in its repos so far!
Opera, VLC installed no problems. it come with Midori which I believe is the new big thing in lightweight browsers, so I may force myself to use it ![]()
I'm sure the apps it comes with are fine for video and music I just wondered if vlc was available so again I'll try to use what comes with it, I guess they were chosen for a reason ![]()
Funnily enough it's kicked off again recently. This morning in fact. The fan stopped making the noise about a week ago, dunno why. Was suspicious that the fan had just stopped, but no it's fine. Then this morning popped into Ubuntu, and was posting on another forum when it just logged me out. WTF? Logged back in again, and there were strange black pixels across the screen. Well, panic set in, because this happened when the fan packed up last time. So I took the side off the PC and it's fine. Booted into Windows 7, checked my various temperature monitors, all well.
I've since played some PES 2010 and it's been absolutely fine. So now I'm wondering if it's the drivers I'm using on Ubuntu. I'm currently using the Nvidia PPA for the very latest drivers, hoping for better performance. It has indeed been great for some time, but it's the only thing I can think of, unless this card is slowly heading for the graphics card mental home in the sky.
Slitaz has had some excellent reviews. It won a thing in Linux Format a while ago about lightweight OS's. Let me know how it progresses.
Another potential one for the Eee. I've heard the next UNR will feature no Open Office. That's a good idea, but really there's a load of things the UNR could lose to make it better across all netbooks imho.

yeh, in the supermarket I saw Linux Format gave it their best lightweight distro. I gave it a go a few years ago, and nice, but more as an experiment in what can be done. Now first impression it's a very usable distro, which works nicely out the box.
