I had a dig around and from the tories I read it looked liek the guy I was thinking of left to do Woof for a bit, then went back to do proper Puppy.

http://distrowatch.com/

is probably worth checking out for you at the moment, as the current latest distro listed on the homepage is Teenpup which I used on th PII450 for a bit and liked a lot.

Als this week's Distrowatch Weekly has a fair bit about MInt, which is interesting. Some of the comments at the bottom are brilliant regarding the "codename" with the new release! It also says that it's responable for stopping distro hopping Winking For me that's true, I've currently got it on all 3 machines, somehting I said I'd never do, as I thought I may as well play with different distros on each one!

Teenpup! That's the one. That sounds like it'll be perfect for the Eee. I'll deffo give that a go. The new release sounds as though it isn't too far away as well. Thanks Ad. Happy

Interesting about Mint. It continues to gather pace, and is beginning to knock Ubuntu out of the way a bit. Maybe it's about time I switched distros.....

Ubuntu 10.04 supports iPhone and iPod Touch out-of-the-box

Not that I've got any Apple devices but that is pretty big news!

Also on distrowatch saw mentioned PCLinux OS 2010 beta is out! PCLOS, that brings back memories Happy

Well, that'll soon get removed, either by a firmware update from Apple or their nasty lawyers. Sad Not something I'd be hanging my hat on as an Ubuntu user.

Blimey PCLOS.... Didn't know that was still going. I'll have to check it out when it's done. There was some infighting wasn't there a while ago? Remember either you or me mentioning it.

I don't know why Apple would be unhappy about it. Gates would be more unhappy Winking

As mentioned in that article, and at least one person has posted on dvd reviewer, they want MS Windows for itunes.

Probably doesn't bother Apple that much but I've seen on various Linux forums ppl discussing what mp3 player to get with ipod not being an option. I wouldn't buy one for he missus or me since you can't reliably/easily use it with Linux.

Apple have already previously locked Linux (Specifically RhythmBox) out of the iPod. I'm sure you'll find something on Google about it. I'd expect it to happen again. Hope I'm wrong though.

I don't like to buy proprietary players like the iPod either. It has to work on Linux for me, so it's usually just smaller brand MP3's like Sansa etc. Sony's are supposed to be OK though. I know my Ericsson phone is great on Linux.

New look Linux

Ubuntu re-branding unveiled.

Have to say I think it looks a hell of a lot better. Whether the system will recover from some of the damage the koala made is another matter, but it could be a sign of proper competition forthcoming from Ubuntu. And at least it looks the part now. Grinning I'm expecting the next release to be pretty good on the quiet. I hope so anyway. Whether you like the OS or not, Ubuntu is a big Linux name now with a big responsibility.

I'll still wait for Mint Happy

the missus has a Sony Erricson phone, haven't hooked it up to the pc yet, wasn't sure whether it was best to tell he to use XP for it?

Also she's thinking about getting an mp3 player, again not sure whether it's best to use xp or openSUSE to rip/transfer files.

I find my Sandisk one works better with XP, but I drag and drop rather than use a media player to transfer files.

Which rip program do you use?

Phoney Linux

I always use the Linux for the phone, though my phone is the older W810i one. I just find it easier to use drag and drop to the various folders. If I plug it into Windows you get the whole nagging thing. The disc that comes with the phone is too, too fussy and nannying. I haven't even bothered with it on W7, though I tried it on XP. It gets on your nerves. Much better to use Linux for file transfers with mine.

RE: Ripping - I'm quite old fashioned actually, since I still prefer to buy CD's rather than downloads so I don't have a drive that's always full of digital music. I just rip a disc as I feel like it, and I always use Banshee for that. I just find it better all round once I've set the options to the right thing. RhythmBox does the same job, but I had a problem with it halting for long periods during the ripping process. Dunno what was causing it, but Banshee doesn't do that.

more than just a small facelift then for ubuntu

refreshing-the-ubuntu-brand

First thing I noticed was the buttons are on the "wrong" side.

Anything but the buttons!

I played with a mac style skin for Ubuntu once, wasn't long before I changed the buttons back to being what I'm used to under MS.

I'd have thought even ppl used to Linux rather than MS Windows will change the buttons to what they know and love, and new "recruits" could be put off more than they were before. Seems like change for change's sake Confused
