Getting junk off a new computer.

A day or so back I was looking at HotUK deals & someone had recently bought a laptop. They said they downloaded a couple of programmes that took off all the junk that had been loaded on & it sped up the laptop. I have searched & searched, gone into my history but can't find the links. Can anyone point me in the direction of these programmes?

I think ninite was for putting quality apps on the computer. The De Crapifier is linked off that thread too though.

For what it's worth, whenever I get a new computer, I go straight into Control Panel/Add/Remove Programs and if something doesn't sound useful, I delete it, especially the trial version of whichever anti-virus they poke on there. Then I go straight to Ninite through the pre-installed browser and download all the stuff I actually want to use.

Whole process should take no longer than half an hour - slowest part is uninstalling, as sometimes you have to restart, but Ninite makes putting stuff on very fast indeed. It's particularly useful because it automatically detects your OS and whether you're  32 or 64 bit and automatically downloads the correct and most up to date version of the software you have selected. This doesn't always happen if you google for things individually.

I have twice tried un installing the rubbish but it makes the laptop operate badly(too much to explain). I have done 2 system restore's. In the past I have removed crap from several computers without problems.

I bought a legitamate copy of Windows 7 & installed it onto my other laptop, is it possible to install this Windows 7 disk onto my Asus but put the Asus Microsoft number in?

That depends if it's an OEM key and a non-OEM disk, or vice versa. Confused They have to match annoyingly. If you bought a legit copy of W7 that didn't come with hardware and isn't explicitly OEM, then that's a retail DVD.

I think if the key is OEM then on the sticker it will say under Windows 7 Home Premium (or whatever version it is) OEM Software on the next line.

Unfortunately when I went to check my laptop I discovered that pretty much the entire sticker is unreadable. Confused I think I was worried this would happen a while back so took a picture of it. You might want to do the same!

I have the retail DVD Windows 7 34 & 64 bit. The laptop came preloaded with Windows 7 in a partition. I have made a DVD of the laptop recovery section. I always take a photo of the serial number.
