Help needed badly please......turned unit on this morning and BBBBAANGGG.....Nothing..but errom message as follows...
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
\windows\system32\config\system..........I dont have a cd as the comp was pre-loded when i bought it......i do have the heurins recovery cd if thats any help......absolutlly baffled......thanks moods

try going into xp live on hirens and do a chkdsk /f/r on the volume, I've known that be enough to fix such problems, if not try copying the corrup file from the hirens live to your hard drive

I think you are going to need to do a repair install. 
I presume there is a license key on the underside of the laptop? You should be able to get an installation CD from a torrent, you just need to know if your key is OEM or Retail and grab the right one.

Bang? An actual bang or a metaphorical one? I've had a hard drive go tits up on me in the last few days, and I'm not convinced it's simply a duff driver that's caused the problems so I'm physically replacing the drive as a matter of course. I can always reuse the drive if it turns out to be okay, and it gives me the opportunity to double the HDD capacity of the machine.

I haven't seen this error for ages but if memory serves you just need to copy the relevant file from C:\Windows\Repair to C:\Windows|\System32\Config. You can either do that with the mini XP on Hiren's disc or you can boot to NTFS DOS pro on the same disc and do it that way. The graphical method is probably easier.
The relevant file in this instance is 'system'.
