Basically the emergency conference went a bit like this:-
iPhone 4 has sold shed loads so must be great. Here look at all these carefully selected statistics proving how great it is. Look these other phones that Apple don't make have a similar problem too. There is no problem. We repeat, there is NO problem.
Here have a free bumper thing to rectify the problem.
Conference over (Apple's budget was a bit bigger than mine though so you will need to add your own flashiness)
Thing is Bezza....I agree that they have gone about it in a very odd way, but the issue has also been blown out of proportion (probably because people love to knock successful companies) in my opinion.
However, has it appeared to dent the popularity of the device? Not from what I can see.
Will it stop more people from buying it? I very much doubt it.
Is it still (despite the 'problem') a big issue for Apple? Again, I doubt it.
They still have a 3 week delivery estimate on them, and the O2 stores around me can't get them in fast enough to sell them, so I don't think it's a big issue.
Also, to be honest, if you're spending £500 or £600 on a phone, you're probably going to do all you can to keep it in tip top condition (i.e. put it in a case!) so it's unlikely to affect you.

But the cases look like something you'd get in a Happy Meal.

(To be honest I've bought mine from DealExtreme for about $2 each and they're much better!)

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was.
Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary
Looking at the pics for that bumper they are going to give away free, which they are currently selling for £25, it's just a glorified rubber band isn't it?
How can anyone at Apple justify £25 for that, or even anyone on the planet!

Are you implying Apple may be over charging for something because it is an official Apple branded product? How preposterous!

From my knees...
I am probably not the person to speak all official here as I do not know 100% what has been said and proven etc. All I know is that a friend of mine has the iPhone 4 and is very unhappy that when the bottom left of his phone is covered by his hand in a very natural grip then the signal goes from full 3G to No Signal.
Personally I hate all phone covers as I feel like that old man that still insists on wearing his mobile clipped to his belt all of the time but these bumpers are super ugly.
The whole conference thing just made me laugh though. It was literally them screaming "there is no problem" one minute and then next minute saying "here, have a bumper to solve the problem". There was no admission of fault and the statistics they used were imo distorted. They threw around a figure that only 0.5% of iPhone owners had called Applecare to complain. The reason for that is likely to be that most owners had read the stories on the internet of Apple denying the problem and doing nothing and so therefore chose not to bother complaining.
They were also quick to brand it the most successful launch of a phone after selling 3 million phones or near to it. This figure has nothing to do with the brilliance of the phone and more to do with the success of the previous phones and hype that Apple had whipped up about it.
There is a lot of hype about the new A Team film and millions will pay to see it. Doesn't mean its a good film though.
You're right there is a lot of hype (Apple are good at hype).
But they're certainly successful as a company (regardless whether their products are flawed).
I think Apple's attitude is that enough people won't care about that flaw, so they can have their money back, since there are plenty of other people queuing to get their hands on one.
Pure arrogance I know, but they're getting away with it.
For me the iPhone 4 is exactly what I want in a phone/portable media device, and I'm always going to use a case (as I have done since my iPhone 2G) so the product flaw for me isn't really an issue. However, it will be for other people.
I considered the HTC Desire, but the battery life is poor when compared to the iPhone and since I've invested so much at home in my music collection on iTunes, and already have a Macbook, it makes more sense to stick with the Apple brand.
