splitting tv signal

we recently moved the old tv downstairs, so we wanted to run a signal through to it without having to buy a new aerial, to be honest we don't watch much telly so we didn't want the expense. we have an aerial point on the wall were the old tv know sits, the cable from that comes through to the room where the other tv is. so i bought a simple, cheap, y shaped tv splitter and connected the main aerial that comes in from outside and a cable to my tv and this one going through the wall into the indoor aerial box.

this has worked ok for the past week, but the picture can be a bit jumpy with some channels not working at all. i know this could be down to a lot of things, namely the weather which has been really bad, and the splitter i bought, very cheap plasticky. but i wanted to see it would work at all. my tv cable, coaxial male to male isn't that good either. would it be worth me getting a better coaxial cable, and a better splitter. i know i probably won't improve it much without spending but if i can get a better picture for a bit more money then i will do it. cheers.

Yes to all your questions but make sure it's set up right.
Your Y spltter has two females and one male, it should plug into the wall with the male leaving the two females free to have both cables connecting to both TV's.

Next would be a small amplifier to boost the signal. If one TV works ok from the socket then a single output one should do ok with the splitter connected to that in the same way, but tbh, you can get twin out boosters pretty cheap nowadays so might be as well to just do that.
