I just got a replacement battery off ebay for my iPod Video, and it came with a plastic tool, which much like the plastic tools I got for my iPhone 2G, seem to be completely rubbish. ![]()
Has anyone opened up their old iPod and changed the battery? Is there a knack to it? Are the tools really as bad as they seem and do I need to get ones that don't fall apart in seconds leaving my iPod unopened, and if so where is the best place to get them?

I opened up a mate's one (iPod Video) to change his battery, there are little clips you need to be wary of.
I'm sure I watched a video on Youtube on how to do it, so you may be best to do the same.
Yes I watched those, it seems to be the tools are always really nasty cheap crap plastic and break.
I got the bottom clips undone but it broke on the sides. Very frustrating.

Probably due to trying to pry the case apart.
Those little clips need to be pushed in the opposing direction to their hold and usually there are two of the tools, I use one to push the seam into the unit to separate the clips whilst the other "follows" behind to stop them snapping shut again.

I got my pry tools from deal extreme, I needed to use 2 pry tools to get mine open.
Word of warning re deal extreme- it took over 3 weeks for my order to arrive. They did the job I wanted them for, but it you are in a hurry you might be better off looking on Amazon or ebay for a UK seller.
I gave mine away when I'd finished with them, or I'd of sent you the ones I had.
I changed the back cover on mine as well as the battery, looks like new now.
I was apprehensive about taking mine apart, but I'm glad I did it now.
There are loads of videos on youtube showing how its done, but for someone who built their own arcade machine, doing this should be a piece of cake. ![]()

I got a different looking opener from ebay in the end, which seems a lot tougher. It looks a bit like some artists clay making tool, and it did the trick although it took ages, aggravated my RSI, and I'm not sure how many devices it would open before it broke (but the answer is at least one more than the ones that came with it).
Cheers for the advice.
On a related note, I also tried out Rockbox this week:

Control from my iPod clock radio was sluggish, found the wheel overly sensitive (even worse than the Apple firmware, wish there was a way to make it not select next/prev selection when I go to press the OK button), the interface a bit geeky (even with an iPod classic theme) and have now removed it.
