Large screen TV recommendations please!

Elite Donator

Coming up on Mum's birthday and she's starting to have trouble with eyesight.
Also she has my older 42" samsung plasma that has the audio issue. I found out it's the internal amp causing the audio glitch and it runs fine with a seperate amp however the amp remote buttons are too small for her to read and if she knocks the amp off the "Video1" input she can't get it back without a bit of trouble, leading to her sitting with her TV off sometimes til I find out and reset it.

So, a week and a bit til she's 88 and I thought "phuck it, get her a nice telly so she can see it easier and solve the remote issue"

Richer Sounds have an LG 50" for £400 at the mo, not superb specification but freeview and HD Ready./ Doesn't need to be a Full HD panel as she's currently happy watching an 1024x768 42" with standard Sky+ box.

Obviously money is tight at the minute so don't want to seem penny pinching but I think I can just about stretch to the £400 (and might end up with other family chipping in to bring it down a touch) but does anyone have any other recommendations in the price area?

Doesn't have to be Plasma, no point in 3D, don't want to replace mine and give her that (although probably sensible option but it's her birthday so I'd rather buy her brand new) and don't want to sky rocket the price.

So far the LG seems a front runner but the requirements would be:

Minimum 42" (prefer larger)
Easy to use.
Large (if possible) remote or easy to find codes for a Universal remote with big buttons
Around the £400 mark
Decent but not necessarily mind blowing picture quality, this will NOT be used for BD etc,

Elite

Nice Hitachi 42" in the Argos sale.

Fi was you, I'd want to see the remotes and reckon that will sway it.

I'm not sure if there are any big button illuminated ones supplied with any sets but, if not, maybe one of those choccy bar size programmable ones would fit the bill.

Thanks Mike but really want to increase the size, 42" is just getting too small for her to see (remember this is a failing eyesight thing Sad )

Spoke to a guy in RS last night, asked them to order and would go in and pay tonight, he told me should be in Friday (which is ok, Friday is mum's birthday).
Get there, wait for ages cos they keep getting tied up (unbelievably busy for half 6!) finally get to the front, different guy checks the sheet and..... it's not been ordered Cool

Apparently there was one in stock today but that went too, and there appear to be 4 on order and 3 asked for so looks to me like someone ordered, went in today and got the one in stock... again, no biggie to me but I need it for Friday so this guy tells me all going well there should be one of those on Friday for me.

I just checked the model number as I said I thought he had it wrong in store... and it's different from the 1080i AND the 1080p models online... could be a variant but no way to tell but if it is, I think he's ordered the 1080p variant at £100 more.
If so, I will NOT be a happy chappy come Friday but no way to know until it's in.
Haven't paid for it yet either which is another thing I don't like about all this.

Anyway, RS hasn't failed me before so fingers crossed they won't this time either. If I ring to check the number and they have it wrong then I'm screwed anyway as it's too late to order one in.

Oh, and apparently the LG beats the Samsung I was also looking at as the remote buttons are much larger and the menu system on screen much easier to understand, and better sound quality.

Until Friday.....
