New LCD or Plasma

I have been given the ok to get a new lcd after my son broke my last one. What is the best one I could get below £700 the only stipulation I have is 42". I watch a lot of sport and watch the HD channels on Sky and Blue Rays from my PS3. LCD or Plasma is the main confusing point. I ahve seen a lovely 600hz 42" Samsung Plasma the picture looks excellent on HD, but are plasma's better or worse showing SD programms.
Please help.

Usually better, but as you say you watch a lot of sport, so it might be worth considering screen burn (image retention) if you go for plasma.
Most things move and stop it happening, but sports fans tend to forget about scores on the screen, clocks/timers etc.

BluRay and HD channeling should have marginal differences with the current crop out there.

I also would have said LCD due to the fact that you mentioned PS3.  Once again for "screen burn".  I don't care how many people say they don't ever have marathon gaming sesions.  You do.
