Back to the OP, if at all possible, try to get a 40" screen

I'd agree with that, 37" is a bit of a 'no man's land' size.
The OP may even get a 40" for less, with the way supply/demand works.
You can get 32" screens for less than 26" screens, for the same reason.

Looks like a Panasonic then and I was quite taken by the S20 42" Plasma. I appreciate the comments about 42 v 37 but after measuring up I'm afraid a 42 wouldn't quite fit in the only space where it could go and the S20 doesn't come in 37 (or does it?). A  40" would fit (two inches makes all the difference!) but who else makes a 40 besides Sony? And that would be LCD.
And is "HD Ready 1080p" the same as "Full HD"?

Where?

Loads make 40".
The Sammy 40C650 is a great TV.
Good price here.
Or, given you don't want any 'toys' etc. the Sony 40EX403 is a great TV.  £599 too.

Once you find a TV you like try looking on avforums plently of reviews and even more expert advice there.

Competent

I got the Sony 40 inch 503 model for £675 from Amazon.

Very pleased with it - picture quality great, sound not brilliant, but good enough.

My Mrs prefers the sound to the Loewe it replaced.

By the way, Loewe may be "high end" - but pretty unreliable in my experience (32 inch CRT and 26inch TFT).

Now "downgraded" to Panasonic (plasma in lounge) and Sony (lcd in conservatory).

Change of plan! Now after a 32" (can't accomodate anything bigger) as our 'second telly" first (for me to retreat to, to watch films (Blu-ray imminent) and 'decent' programmes (so needs to be good with SD and HD) Will also be next to Broadband connection so can do all that internet stuff without dongle). Main telly to come later (37" or 40" max).
So am looking at Sony EX403 (or NX503 both at £400) or Samsung C650 at £470 (C530 at £320 as budget option, but no Freeview HD). Just noticed two of these were originally recommended above!
Also impressed by picture and size of Philips 7404 (?) but no Freeview HD. Or what about Panasonic S20B (and get internet access through blu-ray player instead?). Should I be worrying about 100hz at this size??
So..... what would you go for out of above options?

Yes... any TV advertised as 1080p should be Full-HD.

I don't know why they say "HD Ready 1080p"... it must be incredibly confusing to the casual buyer/browser! (...why not just stick to "Full HD"?)
