Can a PS3 output 4:3 in wide?

Just going through some of my older stuff and some of my DVDs are 4:3 format.
Not a buying choice, was the only way they made 'em lol.

So, my DVD player stretches them to wide without too much distortion but the PS3 only seems to output 4:3... anyone know if there's a setting I can change to stretch them?

No, because every time someone watches a 4:3 film stretched to 16:9, God kills a kitten.

Watch it as it was intended, not distorted. If you must, then I suspect it is a function of your TV rather than the DVD/PS3.

They should be sent to Ogster then... he enjoys the odd Dog meal, I'm sure he wouldn't mind a side order of kitten...
Unfortunately in this case it's a TV series not a film

Nope, it's the player.
How do I know this?
Both are connected to the same TV with the TV on the same settings.
My DVD player upscales and shows them in wide where the PS3 doesn't.

This is probably the only reason I keep hold of my DVD player other than the regional capabilities.

Even less reason to stretch it then.

I'm sure my TV can do different formats for different inputs though.

Luckily it looks like the PS3 can't do it: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/settings/bdsettings.html#852

Jimbo,
There are definitely options to stretch 4:3 a few different ways.  Think it's BD/DVD Upscaler - or something like that?

The BD/DVD thing worked when I set it to "normal" for some Simpsons episodes I had on a hard drive, very early 4:3 ones, but it's not having it with these discs.

dunno if it helps, but on my crappy LG 32" lcd,  if i connect the ps3 via component, it'll let me zoom/stretch the screen, but via HDMI the screen is locked into whatever perspective the ps3 decides to output Sad  (vga connection also will not allow zoom etc)
