So, my Dad says, "got a new Sky HD box, how do I copy my programmes from the old one to it?", to which I replied, "you can't."
Shows how much I know, I said I'd have a little look on the net just in case, low and behold there is a free utility to do it, you just have to connect the HDDs to your PC and know the models of your Sky boxes.
So, Copy+ here I come, I'll let you know how I go.

So, first thing I've learnt, the older box is a Pace BSKYB 3100, and Little Endian, whilst the new box is an Amstrad DRX890-C, and Big Endian, so I need to use the convert option in the software to go between the two.
However that means no Sky during the whole process, which I have no idea how long it will take, so going to wait until late tonight before I do it, after everything that needs to be recorded today has been.

If it works like a Sky+ hard drive swap out, you could image the old drive to a PC drive so yer machine is back up n running quickly.
Also would mean the HD box would be unaffected during that part of the process... and there would be a copy if it all went TU so you could still fire up the old box to watch what was on it ![]()
And.... if it's just to watch them... why not meantime just have both boxes wired up, the Sky+ with no LNB feed and put yer card back in when you want to watch what's on it until it's empty....?
(obvs. doesn't apply to stuff you wanna keep forecer
)

You really ought to read the site you own more often, or tweak that search engine a bit.

I consider myself an optimist, albeit an optimist with cynical tendencies and a dark side that Lucifer himself would find a little creepy. (Perhaps you’ve noticed.) You don’t normally associate cynicism with an upbeat pov. But I have exactly that combination and will defend it.

Okay, so after googling to find instructions on how to get inside the HD box (I've already been inside the original Sky+ a few years back when the HDD died and needed a replacement) and opening that, I found I don't have to do much once the case is off to get access to the HDD connectors at the back.
So I put that under my desk next to my tower, ran SATA cables for power+data to it, did the same with the IDE drive from my other machine, and loaded up Copy+.
Had to delete the partition that existed already on the HD box to get Copy+ to let me overwrite it (safety mechanism), started doing that and it moaned about cross linked files and recovering clusters. After which if I said yes, it would crash. ![]()
I do however know I downloaded the latest beta, so I went back and installed the latest stable version and that is currently working fine, copying across everything in what looks to be about 30 mins for a mostly full 130GB drive.
After this I have to convert the Endian from Little to Big, then put it back in the HD box, screw everything back together and shove it under the TV. Then I have to do a planner rebuild just to be sure when it boots up and I'm done, apparently! Will let you know how that goes.
So far though, this Copy+ software is excellent.

So did the copy, did the conversion to Big Endian, which took frighteningly little time, I guess not every word on the disk is stored this way, just fat tables.
Then spent an hour trying to get the plastic sliding lid of the HD box back on, didn't quite have the metal lid on properly underneath which flummoxed me for ages.
Anyway, then did the recommended Planner Rebuild after turning on the HD box, and all seemed fine. Apart from the fact the UI was running like a total lame dog. Anyway, went to bed, got up this morning, did the over-the-air firmware update (you disconnect the mains, and then plug it in holding down Backup on the box until the four lights on the front come on, then wait until the onscreen message goes away and its in standby), now its fast and smooth.
Only problem is the pay channels don't work because we haven't rung up sky and got them to pair our box with our card.
All hunky dory though, not a difficult process at all.

Or callback, can't remember what it's called but it's one of them, then the card will work fine.
Only thing that might not work at that point is recording which will need you to ring Sky.
Obvs if it works you don't...... ![]()
