The first official transmissions will be available on December 2nd(2009) and there will be a very limited amount of kit available at that time. The full rollout then begins leading up to the World Cup next year.
The above is answer I got when enquiring if my telly with inbuilt freeview was compatible with HD freeview and when it was going to start broadcasting. This info approx 6 months old but I would guess that little, if any, current new TV's are compatible with HD freeview.

Unfortunately most people are completely confused about Freeview HD and it's not surprising really.
People assume that if they have "Freeview" and their TV is "HD ready" that they'll get "Freeview HD" when it eventually broadcasts for all.
And they would have done if OFCOM had decided to use the same bloody codecs and transmission protocols as we use for 'normal' Freeview (like I believe France, Spain & Italy are doing - although I may be wrong on this). They also took a very long time making this decision and so that's why we're only now seeing the hardware come out.
So now all non-Virgin/Sky/FreeSat users all need new hardware with DVB-T2 tuners that can also handle the MPEG4 codecs for Freeview HD.
Should we throw radio into the confusion zone here? Analogue radio to be phased out by 2015, and DAB already going to be replaced by DAB2 and probably DMB for car radios etc.
So every car in the country with a standard radio tuner will fail to receive anything come 2015, and even if you have already invested in DAB hardware, chances are you'll need to replace it before 2015 as it is already outdated.
Don't you LOVE modern technology? (rhetorical!)
