Mate of mine wants to improve the sound from his PS3/SKY/TV.
He has some good stereo speakers already, so he's just looking for an amp.
He's not bothered about 5.1, stereo will be fine.
Does he need to bother with amps with optical inputs for the PS3 and SKY, if he's not going to bother with 5.1?
Or maybe optical is the only option for them?
In which case, can optical be set to stereo only?
I'm not the Doc, but you can certainly tell the PS3 how many channels to output over whatever connector you use. Having said that, if multi-channel isn't a concern you could just use the analogue stereo jacks. You'd be hard pressed to find a decent amp without a few S/PDIF inputs nowadays anyway.
I think the PS3 may be the stumbling block there, as it only does optical (I checked photos on the net)
Tell me if I'm wrong here though, but....
If he connects his TV via analogue L+R to an amp.
Doesn't everything being sent to the TV then go to the amp?
In other words, why connect everything seperately to the amp, when he could just connect the TV?
Depends on the TV and if/how it allows you to configure audio pass-through etc.
The PS3 comes with the usual red, white and yellow cables, so you can just use those if you want (but of course the quality won't be as good, more so the video). As I said, most amps will have have at least one input for both types of older digital interconnect (coaxial and optical).
He's got everything connected to the TV via HDMI.
We're going to give a whirl tonight.
We'll just connect the L+R out from the back of the TV to the amp and see how that works.
He can switch off the TV speakers in the set up menu.
only problem you should get from that setup is lip-sync.
You are:
Sending from playback device to TV.
Picture is displayed but audio is now rerouted from TV to amp
Amp now plays the audio.
It's milliseconds but many people can notice it.
If the amp has an optical in you can set multi-output to on for the PS3 so the optical or the TV can be used for audio (the way mine is set) and usually this bypasses the lip sync issues or lessens them to acceptable,

Cheers for that.
I actually heard/read lip sync was more of an issue if you connected your sources to the amp direct, rather than the way we're doing it. ![]()
Ach well, we'll gee't a go!

It can be, but usually the amp will advance the audio and has the options to set the delay in it's sub menus ![]()

'Tis the only way to find out if it'll work or not, and if at first you don't succeed, it's in the boot then wi' the heid ![]()

AYE!
Take your bleedin' time!
What do you reckon then.
Using the headphone jack out of the TV be ok?
