Johann, I had the same problem.
I have a Virgin box for cable tv and the LG would not detect any channels and I could therefore not use Timer Record. The solution is to help the LG find some channels. To do this I connected an ordinary (not powered) indoor aerial to the LG. As long as this aerial can detect a few channels, even weakly, you can now enter Setup and detect (analog) channels. Once that is done you can remove the aerial and you should be able to use Timer Record.
With my Virgin box, on entering Timer Record and clicking 'New', I press the AV/INPUT button on the remote to enter 'AVI' in the channel box.
Hi,
I might be having a blonde moment here, but I would like to follow the instructions to make my recorder multi-region, but I can't find a PROG button on the front panel. (LG RHT497H). Is it called something different?
Thanks
I bought a brand new RHT498H the other day. I'm trying to dub some DVDs to its HDD but I cannot get the menu page on the left side of the screen as the manual claims should be here. Also, each time it says select the track on the DVD, it starts playing.
Am I doing something basically wrong?
SolarMac, the prog button is the down arrow on the circular control thingy at the front of the machine.

Many thanks (RHT498H)I don't have any experience with this model but have had this issue with other hardware (PCs, DVD and PS3) and usually there is a setting in the output or audio menu for the HDMI to output digital audio.
If the system is a home theatre then it probably won't have the option, if it's a standard DVD then check for the output location (it'll probably be set to co-ax, SpDif or Optical) and try to change to HDMi
