Yep, it's belting it down here in good auld Glesga.
I spotted it changing from rain to snow about 40 minutes ago, very  sleet-ish at that point and now it's a full force freefall of the white crap Sad
Taxi is almost white in the space of the 20 minutes it's been parked and the pavements have started to turn that semi-slush way they do when they were wet and the snow is gradually cooling them and soaking the water up to let it land.

I'll give it an hour and it'll be white outside Sad

Not enough down yet for that and I effin hate the stuff.
Probably gonna mean another forced night off work too if it keeps falling but looks like it's slowed up a little.

Sky is really really greyish white though Confused

Frustratingly snow free in Aberdeen all winter.
Fully prepared for it with winter tyres on both cars.
And looking forward to taking the youngest sledging for the first time.
But none to be seen.

I know a lad who's a tyre fitter for a big company, the kind of lad you see on the side of motorways risking life n limb changing HGV tyres on the spot...

They fitted winter tyres to his van near the end of last year, after a few days of driving it he requested they took them off and put the originals back on as he said he had never felt so unsafe driving a van in his life.

They refused, quoting health and safety bollox that he needed to have them on it...

Clearly something wrong with the tyres fitted then.
But anecdotal evidence like that helps your anti winter-tyre stance, I suppose.
With regard to winter, my over-riding impression of winter 2011/2012 is of high winds.
Give me weeks of snow over destructive high winds, any time.

I'd expect the large company he works for would know how to fit tyres properly and know if they had faults.

But I'm NOT anti winter tyre, I've just never seen proof of their "worth" to make me go out and spend the money on them.
As a matter of fact, a recent Taxi magazine here had an "article" written by a driver who was almost word for word the same as yourself in regard to the tyre situation.
They also quoted that although you can get them for the Peugeot/Fiat/Merc ranges, you can't get them for the LTi TX ranges.

For those who wonder what I'm talking of there, the Peug/Fiat/Merc are the "people carrier" types and generally are the van variant converted for Taxi use, the LTi TX are the standard "bubble" shaped hackney out there and in any city although the carriers are becoming more common, I'm pretty sure they are far outweighed by TX's.

And it's not they are hard to get hold of, they are not manufactured for the TX wheel type, so if they are such a fantastic cost and safety efficient option (£400 was the cheapest in the article for the 52 plate Eurotaxi I'm driving) and there are so many TXs out there, why isn't a tyre manufacturer making winter tyres to suit them?!

Then again, I supose that'd be because all us hack drivers are tight-fisted buggers who won't part with the cash! Lol

To high winds or that it's a bind and inconvenience... it's a nightmare and I'd take winds before snow any day.
You can reduce your speed in wind and stay on the road but if you hit ice with hard packed snow it's bye bye time and pray you go in a straight line.

But.. back to the original point, it's stopped here now after it got a bit heavier, cars have a covering but the pavements/roads are only a little slushy for now (thank gawd! I'm working later tonight!)

I would love lots of snow...but not til after 3rd February coz my brother is in Nottingham and won't be able to get home if it snows too much before then Happy

Then I'd like a week of really heavy snow, so that I can't move my car and have to spend the week dragging the kids everywhere on the sledge I intend to buy them at the first sign of it...must remember to go buy some new wellies while I'm thinking about it.  The kids keep asking for it and I love it Happy

I agree with Bowfer though and hate the high winds, they make everything difficult, but snow makes everything pretty Happy  Nightmare for my mum though who becomes housebound til its completely thawed Confused
