General Forum - RE: Anyone been to the Gambia then? - Page 2

Well back from 2 weeks in The Gambia, as i said b4 booked cheap last minute , basic hotel (Badala Park) and have to say i had the best time, absolutely loved it , so much thinking of going back in March as I have 1 weeks holiday left and can combine it with week from next year and get away for another 2 weeks. People were sooooo friendly (some on the make but most genuine) bumsters not really a bother to me (hard skin), weather amazing (apart from coming back to minus freakin 4).
Did a couple of days at a local school which was so much fun with the kids, took some supplies from hotel with managers blessing i might add and bought some there which went down well, beaches were good, food very nice and cheap.
Visited a couple of homes while there and again surprised, arrived in evening and was shown into the mums part, there was no light and 5 or 6 kids sitting around a stand alone light doing their homework, then shown into the couples part (the family all stay together watching assorted kids) and when the lights went back on they had a beautiful place, tiled floors, 3, 2 and 1 seater black leather sofas, tv, sattelite and 2 rooms for them and 3 kids belonging to different family members. They were very polite and interesting to talk too and interested in life outside The Gambia
I also (as i was in the area) made the decision to go to Dakar, friday to monday, journey was a nightmare, bout 8 or 9 hours in total, taxis, station wagon (with 6 other people) and ferry and while I am glad i did it, I would not visit Dakar again, even being a city boy I really did not like the city or the people, dead rats on street, people following me for streets till I actually told 2 of the to **** off!!! Something I have never done on holiday before or hopefully will again. The fact there was a riot on the saturday was nothing to do with it lol.
All in all given the prices, people, weather I had an absolute blast . Check out trip advisor for my full review of the hotel.
