Ringtones on the iPhone can be changed to whatever you want whereas message alerts can only be changed from a selection of about 5 or 6. Ringtones are in a strange mpsomething forrmat which is different to mp3 to try and force you to purchase ones from iTunes. However, freeware is readily available to convert stuff from mp3 to this format and you can just import it to your itunes then and put on your phone for use.
So in answer to your question, Apple do take the p*** with ringtones but its easily gotten around without the need for voiding warranties etc.
My ringtone at the moment is Under My Wheels by the Prodigy, with the message alert as the standard one that comes with Samsung phones.

I thought in iTunes you could click any mp3 in your library and convert it to a ringtone? The main limit being the length.Officially only if you buy the said tune from the Apple store.
Unofficially you select the desired tone, set it to be 30 seconds long in the options choosing your preferred 30 second segment and save it to your desktop as say "tune 1 small"
Then you go back to the original track and reset it's length to full (or it only plays 30 seconds now
)
Go to the desktop "tune 1" which currently has an .M4A extention and change it to an M4R.
Now put it back into your iTunes folder and reimport/resynch.
Wallah, you now have "tune 1" as a custom ringtone in the iPhone ringtone menu.
Sounds harder and longer than it actually is to do. You don't need to change filenames or save to desktop etc you can do whereever you like but I find this the easiest option as it's a doddle to find the adjusted tracks.

Are you saying an iPhone can't use mp3 files as ringtones? If that is true then Apple really do take the **** out of their users....
No, it can't.
One of my major bug-bears when I got the phone and I agree about the taking of urine samples ![]()

If you re-import, it will go into your music folder, won't it?
How do you get it into the customs ringtone menu?
BTW, loving the alternative spelling of 'Voila'.

it won't show as a music track.
you can also rename it back to the original name (ie: Ghostbusters.m4r in my case ) it shows only as a ringtone.
It also automatically shows as a Custom Ringtone in the ringtone selection screen

Nice jiggly bum by the way - is that Megan Fox? tats say so. 8)
Anyway currently the most common calls I get are from;
1) TOH
2) Her Mum
3) Our eldest aged 16
The tones used currently ( I tend to change dependant on mood) are;
1) TOH - 'Bad Things' Jace Everett - theme from True Blood.
2) 'Monster' - The Automatic - do I need to say more?
3) Money,Money,Money - ABBA - same question?
Don't really bother with message tones.
cheers
