She only uses it for surfin t'internet so wanted to reboot it - but have lost CD!!

It's a Samsung R40 can I download from the net or do I have to contact Samsung?

Most new PC's & laptops prompt you to make a recovery image, as you no longer get an OEM install\recovery disc in the first place.

That said theres a number of ahem pre-activated XP (assuming that's the OS in question) restore discs out in the wild, that may solve your problem of lack of restore media. So check your mail. Winking

Well, its just playing up.
bringing up crap when she doesn't need it.

Also when she clicked on Firefox or even IE it said couldnt find program.

Also said that when I went to System restore.

is it a virus?

Maybe your machine has a hidden partion with all your origional programs including windows stored on it ?

My old Packard Bell machine has that and its a simple case of going into SMART RECOVERY to reinstal back to factory programs and settings, if things goes pears up.

Does your make have something similar to that ?

IMPORTANT NOTE: This will completely wipe off all of the 'C' hard drive, so its best to store any personal programs and stuff onto memory sticks first.

Hmmm i'll check it out

Or someone might be able to tell me - Samsung R40?

No, no files that we need - just a surfing machine really for the missus. Winking

UPDATE*****

I did a search on google for exactly what the machine was doing - turns out its malware infections. I tried to download some programs to fix - but as they were exe files they won't open and thus do their jobs.

So I did safe mode - didn't work that way either.

Next I tried to see if the reboot section was on the laptop - it is!!
It's called Phoenix.

I went through this to reset the system - looks like I have to choose a restore date.
The only ones on there are 2007!!!
So clicked on one of those - the next stage said it would delete all files etc (fine don't need them) but then when I accepted this the next screen said it recommended I didn't continue as the partition couldn't match or something? Said it could damage the machine - but did I want to continue anyway?

So I said no - it scared me!

Is this just PC talk?

Shall I restore anyway?

System restore wil not get rid of all your viruses, as a lot of data on your C drive will not change, and the viruses will remain..

Have you tried all the free virus checkers and repairers available, like Housecall, spybot, etc.

Mind you some of these malware viruses are hellish to get rid off and a complete wipe of the C drive is best.

So to conclude abut restoring, there are two types.....

System restore back to an earlier date, will not wipe your C drive, and Viruses most likely willl remain.

Complete recovery back to factory setting, wipes the C drive and puts origional pragrams from hidden partition back onto your machine, Viruses gone.

Your computers full recovery info......
