Sorry - I wasn't very clear.
You can't back them up at all in case of failure - HDD fails and that's that. Which, franky, is ridiculous.
You can MOVE them from one PS3 to another. But it's not something you can do to be able to play the same game on multiple PS3's - it wipes the data on both PS3's I think (including the 'to' machine and any data on it.) and can be a lengthy process
None of which helps rehan though - try and get it up and running again.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

Thanks for the advice.
It seems that the answers are:-
Yes - its dead. It can be revived by cooking it - but that will only work for a while and will allow me to transfer data. - Shame
I cannot transfer the HDD from the old to the new and retain the data. - Shame
I can download the DLC again - thats okay
I will lose the save files - thats okay as well.
So wheres the best offer to buy a PS3? I can get one with a small HDD as I can just put in the 500GB hd - even if I lose all the data. Is teh HD the same in the old PS3 and the new Slim one?
Hopefully I can sell the PS3 for parts and one of the controllers as I already have two.
Again - thanks for the help
I was talking to a collegue earlier and mentioned the best part of the internet is forums like this where you can list a question/problem and get a great deal of helful advice.

I haven't looked at any of the slims yet but I believe the drives are just standard 2.5" SATA laptop drives so yes, you should be able to swap in the drive but will need to swap the caddy/cage for the specific model (ie: remove from the phatty and replace with the slim) and I'd personally store the spare drive as a backup should your 500Gb have an issue.Quote:

I think one of the 80Gb phatty (complete) I bought around £25 delivered, no controller though but did have an 80 gig drive still in it.
If you have a scout about for the going rate on them drop me a PM or email with what you'd expect to get on it, if it's not too high I might be interested myself cos like I said, I need to get a BD drive or laser to have a go at fixing up my Region 1 unit,
(and wish I had marked the two BD boards as to which was which lol)

a 320gb ps3 new is about £200, usually with something thrown in, 160gb £170ish, the supermarkets, game, gamestation and amazon all had good deals over Christmas.
I think the most recent deal for a console no extras was at Currys. As Jimbo says that's from following hotukdeals, which is what prompted me for my 320gb bundle from Amazon.

more links to bundles in that thread, may be worth paying a bit more for a bundle and trading in what you don't want if it's convenient/you can be bothered.
