PS3 YLOD?

So I switched on my 40GB FAT PS3 (4yrs old) and it was on for about 5mins and then it powered down. I switched it on Green light - then yellow - then flashing red light.

Does that mean its dead?
Can it be fixed?
Do I need a new one?

I had replaced the HD with 500GB. If I get a new PS3 can I put in the 500GB HD in the new PS3?
Will I keep all my DLC? I have about £80 of stuff on it.

Nope it won't keep the DLC. You have to re-download it all.

Do you have your save games backed up?

you shouldnt have to pay for it again tho, as it will all be tied to your psn,  iirc, you get upto 5 downloads per purchase as long as your logged in with the original psn id.

You can get them fixed, someone on here has a brother that fixes them. There is also the oven method that I used, but it wasn't good for a permanent fix, probably lasted around 3 months between bakes. In the end I bought a new PS3 and sold the fatty for spares on Ebay.

I don't even think you can back up all of your saves.  Some are protected which is disgusting.  Not sure if that limitation also applies to the PSN+ function released not so long ago that backs up your saves online.  Should be standard that when there are games of which you literally can't back your progress up.
Even if you do the full backup, that can only be restored to the same PS3. Confused  Should be against the PSN ID, not the machine.  To actually have no way of backing up game saves that you own and then wish to play on another machine - or a replacement one is ridiculous.

You can do a data transfer between machines, I did it when I bought my new one and it took everything across.

AFAIK it's not 100% and as Ste posted not all data can transfer Sash, albeit Phony make it sound like a direct clone.

For the YLOD'd machine, you could get it professionally reballed but I don't know the costs, or you could do a heat gun/oven bake on it which will usually resurrect it for a few months (again, as posted) but even if you only get  a few hours out of it it should let you get your data off and transferred and your PSN account details deleted.
(Yes, the PSN details are on the machine, NOT the hard drive)

That reminds me, I still need to find another BD drive to try n resurrect my Region 1 machine which has a different problem (think it's had a bad flash at some point)

Ste is talking about a backup which is not the same thing. When I did the transfer all my DLC, saves and patch data all came across, seems pretty much 100% to me.

Sashenden, I did say you couldn't back up all of your saves.  I think for example you can't back up Rock Band save game.  If your HDD crashes/machine YLOD's and that's it. Sad
Except for, as I say, possibly the new PSN+ thing where you can back up to 'cloud' so can continue to play on another PS3.
Some people do have more than one PS3 in use - the fact they can't play the same game from a save file is ridiculous - no matter what they backup.  Even if they were prepared to move the file between machines via a USB stick
I'm fairly confident the Data Transfer function does NOT transfer 'protected' save files.

I don't think you can even backup the save games in one go but need to do it for each game individually..

Ste, I was pointing out that you were saying backups can't be used to transfer protected saves, which is true, fair enough, but the transfer utility is not taking a backup to a memory stick. According to the threads below the protected saves are transferable using the utility. As I said, when I used the utility everything got brought across from the old PS3 to the new one.
