Just watching this on upscaled DVD now and thinking it could look much much better.  Any idea on if this will get a BD release?

I don't think there is an official date set at the moment, but it is mentioned in this article as probably coming out late 2010, and most of the other mentioned films have been released around the predicted dates so it is possible:

Isn't The Abyss DVD a non-anamorphic transfer as well? I still can't believe James Cameron allowed that!

Yes, the DVD is non-anamorphic letterbox, made all the worse by the aspect ratio being so wide.

Yes, I was shocked at how about half of my TV was black when I first put it on, haven't watched this for years...
