beat me to it, was just going to post link to story
Odeon reverses Alice in Wonderland boycott
As you say there was probably a bit of that and a bit of "oh, so people are just going to go to other Cinemas to see it, we'd better come to an agreement then"
Extra free publicity for cinemas, Disney, Burton, Depp et al. so every one is happy ![]()

A short 13 week gap to get the DVD, this is going to kill cinema-.
I for one will just wait for the DVD now, as the savings for a family of four to go to the cinema-, buy tickets for a 3D showing, popcorn and drinks- all round, verses buying the DVD, and even including a KFC bucket meal- thrown in at home, will still be a big saving
As for seeing it in 3D, who cares !

13 weeks will make no diference for people like the missus and I.
we generally buy DVDs when they get reduced to £5, although I am a sucker for films I like coming in a tin or with a free gift ![]()
We go to the cinema to see films we want to see at the cinema if that makes sense? We never think "what shall we do this evening? Let's go to the cinema and see what's on.
We have a look to see what is coming out soon, and decide if we want to see it on the big screen, or are happy to wait and watch it at home. Hollywood blockbusters, 3d films, films which benefit from cinema screen and films we can't wait to see get a a cinema visit.
However, a lot of that is because it's just the two of us, and we like the same films. Also we smuggle our own drinks into the cinema
The cinema for us is an evening out at the weekend. Some people go to the pub, we'd rather go to the cinema.
As I found out with Avatar, Odeon does charge way to much extra for 3d, but Cineworld just charges an extra couple of quid if you want the 3d glasses, so next time you see a 3d film there you can take the ones you bought last time, so it costs same as a 2d film.
Saying that, we're glad we paid extra to see Up, and Avatar in 3d, and are looking forward to Alice in Wonderland in 3d.

They had the top man from Odeon on R5 this morning and apart from beating the patriotic drum to imply the fall of the British way of life if people stopped going to the cinema, he said (and was rather cagey about it) that the deal means Disney can have some "exceptions" to the 17 week rule.

From my knees...
Missus and I just watched it at our local Odeon in 3d (Cineworld only showing it in 2d!), maybe Odeon should have boycotted it ![]()
Not as bad as but suffered same problem as Gilliam's Dr Parnassus, seems Burton got caught up too much in making it look nice (which it did) but forgot to make his version of the story engrossing.
It all looked pretty but the missus and I were disappointed. Also, unlike Avatar and Up we thought the 3d was just tacked on and wasn't really necessary ![]()
It was very OK, missus said it was liek movie versions of Golden Compass and Narnia books, ok but nothing special, just not as atmospheric as it should be.
I haven't read Alice in Wonderland or Through the looking glass (or seen the other film versions) since I was a kid so can't compare to them.
The reason the 3D felt tacked on, is because it was shot in 2D and the 3D was added on on post production.

That's what I assumed. Judging from some of the trailers that will happen a lot now.
the new Toy Story film in 3d fine, some other animation Dragon, didn't look great, but that and new Shrek fine. Was hoping for that Tron trailer, didn't get it, but Tron in 3d makes sense.
But there was an advert for some aweful looking dance film where some street kids have to teach some posh dance school kids how to be "hip", in 3d!
As we left the missus pointed out 2 of the best films we've seen recently were the new Coen Brothers film, and Micmacs, both films that looked nice but relied on great stories rather than gimmicks. maybe we're just getting old ![]()
maybe it was like this when clour started being used in films? they started using colour film on any old tat, and as they say "you can't polish a turd" and people started to get annoyed with this new fangled "colour gimmick"? Maybe sound was the same?
If Alice is anything to go by it will be more and more obvious over the next couple of years whether a film was designed to be in 3d from the outset or it was added because Avatar did well ![]()
I was very disappointed with Alice; it felt superficial, lacking in emotional depth, suffered from some poor acting, too many pop culture references and I hated the 3D which was annoying and took me out of the moment.
