Cinema boycott threatens 'Alice'
Cinema's aren't happy with Disney wanting to release DVD only 3 months after cinema release. I'm guessing Disney thinking a quicker DVD release will stop downloading?

I'm looking forward to seeing this in 3d at the cinema, I hope my local Picture House doesn't join Odeon, Vue with a boycott, but I don't knwo if they can do 3d Sad There's a Cineworld near me to, which does 3d, so I'm glad they're not joining the boycott. When I read the initial story last week, they were going to as well. Guess they realised that's cutting off your nose to spite yoru face.

It's odd though, years ago I'm sure cinemas would never do anything to annoy the mighty Disney, and I would have thought these days where the cinemas are moaning about people illegally downloading, not going to the cinema etc they'd want to show 3D films more

I think it's a good idea on Disney's part to release a movie on to DVD early, and the way cinema's are going I give it less than 10 years before a lot of the popular multiplex chains will close it's doors, and they'll be just one left. Just like the video shop industry, where there's just Blockbusters now.

They blame piracy, but a lot of it, is due to overpriced tickets, overpriced food, not only that you get a huge amount of reviews off the internet, youtube, podcasts, so you pretty much get a fair balanced review on a film. There’s pay on demand content which is continuing to grow that you can get via your Sky box, various consoles etc.

They said that 3D will be the saviour of the cinema, but there's 3D Televisions, projectors are just around the corner, there's 21:9 televisions coming out soon, and all of them will drop in price after a year or two, and it'll be the same moans from the cinemas, and studios again.

They need to show more digitially remastered movies, like Universal did, because the cinemas were packed when The Thing, Scarface, The Godfather was shown on the big screen, so there's money there to be made, and instead of showing it for one day, why don't they do a one week only? That'll give everyone a chance to see the movie.

I'm all for films to be released quicker onto DVD/Blu-Ray that means I don't have to sit with plebs in my local cinema who talk on their mobile phones or get up and go for a p*** every ten minutes! There again will want to see the 3D film in the cinema.

Will it?

I am not convinced just because of the sucess of Avatar

There are management issues to be addressed when going to the cinema in particular mobile phones and general rowdiness of some people not to mention sky high ticket prices

The cost of going to the cinema pretty much rules it out for us now. To take my 2 boys to see anything, allowing for snacks and drinks, it costs about £30 - but if we wait a few months, we can buy the DVD for a tenner. Even our boys can see the logic in that.

Plus we can pause and rewind if we miss anything. Much better.

So until they drastically drop the cost, I don't care what's being shown, a trip to the cinema will be considered a major treat in our household, maybe only occuring once every year or two.

Cinemas need to realise that distribution is changing, and rather than p*** and moan about it, actually get on board. The gap between cinema to DVD is going to keep closing over time, I'm sure.

Our local cinema does a special offer of 95p for adults and kids to see for kids movies throughout school holidays

It's very popular as you need to book online early and it's a selected film which is usually what they have already seen

This dispute isn't about the gap between theatrical run and DVD/BD release. Cinemas were a bit p***ed off that Disney wanted to cut the length of the theatrical run from 17 to 12 weeks, thus depriving cinemas of revenue.

It could be the beginning of a slippery slope that will see smaller films not having any print at all and therefore never having a theatrical release or it could, as Disney says, just be a one off for this film. Only time will tell.

and herein lies the rub. I think a lot of this is just down to plain old lost/gained revenue

On one hand you have the Odeon chain (who are still housing the Premiere - rank hypocrisy, IMHO) who are complaining that the short time between releases will affect their profit margin. 12 weeks is 3 months, any cinema that shows a film for 3 months is scraping the barrel for every penny anyway.

Then there's Disney, who claim they're doing this to combat piracy. This is utter tosh, as most decent Cam/TS screeners can be out within a week, and not just to download. The streaming websites are doing a roaring trade. Sherlock Holmes and Avatar had company-issued DVD screeners on the market within 6 days and 10 days respectively.

No, the reason they're releasing the DVD early is to gain as much income as possible from mummy and daddy while the film is still fresh in Johnny & Sally's minds.

Doubt that very much. This one's the control gerbil

Of course, this whole arguement relies on the certainty that film will be awesome. Personally, I think it looks shyte

It would appear that a deal has been done and now Odeon have reversed their decision and will now be showing the movie.

I can guess that the deal went something like this;

Quote:
Odeon - We don't like you releasing the DVD so early, we'll lose too much money

Disney - ok, if you don't show the movie you don't get to show ANY Disney films, ever, which includes every Buena Vista title AND every Pixar film. Try surviving Easter without the revenue from Toy Story 3 and summer without the profits from Cars 2. How'd you like to be without THAT money?

Odeon - yes sir, sorry sir, shall I bend over now sir?
