The Japanese Ghibli BDs are better than the UK discs. For some inexplicable reason Studiocanal has felt the need to apply DNR to all of them so far...

It's probably out of Studiocanal/Optimum's hands, as the discs are authored by Australia's Madman Entertainment.

I haven't seen the Japanese discs to compare, but what I have seen of the UK discs has been very pleasant. Certainly film grain is present, which you might expect to be completely scrubbed out by excessive DNR.

I have seen comparison shots of the Japanese and UK Laputa on a forum, and there is a difference visible on the freeze frame. Having said that, I wasn't thinking about DNR when I watched the film.

Still, discerning Ghibli-philes are importing the Japanese discs, especially as they have English language subtitle options.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was.
Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary
