Apollo 18

An intruiging concept this one. A found footage movie (Blair Witch, Cloverfield, Paranormal Activity), but set in the solitude of space.

Apollo missions 18-20 are cancelled due to budgetary restrictions (ring a bell?) and Apollo 17 is hailed as the mission's swansong. However, 18 is reinstated and 3 astronauts are sent on a highly classified mission under the DoD's authority for one last, last, absolutely the last time. Honest. The mission involves placing transmitters at strategic positions near the south pole to act as a 'early warning system' if those damn Ruskies decide to launch any nukes.

Things start to get mackerely when one of the little moon rocks they've collected is found on the floor of the LEM (Lunar Excursion Module), outside of its little baggie. The mission continues, and while placing another transmitter, one of the astronauts discovers footprints that don't match theirs, leading to a large crater, in which is sitting an abandoned russian LEM. Shortly after, they find the conmonaut. So far, so trailer.

Sadly, apart from the jump shots, of which I counted 3, there's not a lot to know other that what you've been told in the previews. The film is done very well, shot enirely on hand-held or wall-mounted cameras. The feeling of isolation and abandonment as they lose comms is very well portrayed, and the gradual revelation of the 'bad guys' is done so's not not make the reality ridiculous

SPOILER:
Some Moon rocks are actually lunar-parasitic insects
Can't go higher than 7/10. It'd be higher but the movie ends on one of the biggest movie plot-holes ever created

Better still, have a look for the fiction book "The third alternative". Written in late 70s/early 80s and is about the earlier Apollo missions reporting structures on the moon. Quite a good read for us tin foil hat wearing members and maybe a good read for the saner members

SPOILER:
Presumably it was beamed back in the same way the live footage of the Moon landing was?

I thought it was very poor. Glad I only rented it from Lovefilm. 4/10 from me. Don't bother.

Could have been a quote from me except for the 'rented it from Lovefilm' bit..
