Thinking of giving Golf a go.

Ok, so i'm nearly 40 now and have never played golf. I quite fancy a go but don't really want to just go and slug at some balls and get the arse.

Should I invest in some lessons straight away so I don't pick up any bad habits?

Yes.
Lessons and driving range.  You'll get so much more out of it....
You won't enjoy going to a course (municipal obviously!) and being unable to hit a ball.  And the embarrassment...  Even when you're quite good that first tee is soooooo nerve-wracking.....

If you are the type of person who enjoys teaching yourself, then no, otherwise yes.

Also you can get a really nice second hand set of clubs from American Golf Discount (I think they are still about and do them?) You'll get a much better set for £100 then you would otherwise afford new, and you can try them out in the store usually.

And I'm a big fan of the trolley, or even a golf buggy if they do them, because come the end of the round I don't want my already poor performance ruined by being so tired from carrying a huge back!

Don't do it.
You'll become (another) bore that talks about 'graphite shafts' and does 'air swings' in the office.
Those things alone have kept me away from Golf for 44 years.

Seriously....why do golfists do air swings...?????

Do you mean practise swings?

Yes, but without clubs (like air guitar, if you like)
Every single golfist in our office does it when golf is mentioned.
Extremely weird.
They don't re-enact shots/headers when they talk about football.

So, using my own logic, golf is for w***ers.

Sorry. Grinning

I'm pretty sure I see a lot of people do "he shoots, he scores" for football. Happy

It's not just the 'air swings' that do my head in.
It's the whole 'etiquette' that surrounds it.
The boasting about £300 bats with graphite shafts.
The fact they seem to have to wear a 'uniform' to play it, comprising of T-shirts with golf-specific logos and slacks that they wouldn't wear anywhere else.
I just despise it, even though playing it would undoubtedly help me in a business/career manner.

On this I agree, I don't play with anybody who does any of the things you mention. Even many years ago when I played every week, we just played because we enjoyed the game. Don't get me wrong, we were quite obsessive about actually playing it and trying to do our best, but when it came to attire and clubs, I really don't recall discussing them much other than joking about the driver being a big boomstick.

I refuse to play at any course that inflicts a dress code, golf shoes and red aside, because there are decent reasons for that!

I was once told I had to wear a shirt with a collar to play on what was quite frankly a course that was far from The Belfry. This was a course that had happily taken my money for years prior and just decided to suddenly get strict on pointless rules. Needless to say I never went back.

The game itself though, is great, very difficult, but maddingly addictive. You can spend an entire round being awful, and then suddenly hit the most sweetest magic amazing shot that felt great from the swing to the ping, and it makes you think, "why the hell can't I do that everytime?"

You could always take the other option, roll up your trouser leg, show a bit of chest and swear allegiance to just about every arcane thing imaginable.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was.
Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary
