I think your in danger of going the Newcastle route and looking too much at what you were than the reality of here and now.

Valid point snaps, I think if we hadn't finished so strong in 07/08 season ( we could of won the title) last season might not of seem such a disaster but even now i find it hard to believe that Alonso was the difference between finishing 2nd one year and 7th the next.

I don't follow you closely enough to remember but I'm guessing that you where fairly lucky with injuries in 07/08.
Ferguson openly admitted a couple of years back that that was a big input into winning that year for them.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was.
Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary

I dont rate any of the signings made over the last 12 months. Aquilani was a complete waste of time and money, he was injured when we bought him and now is out on loan.

As for the likes of Jova and Konchesky the way i think of it is, would any of the other big clubs sign these players......the answer is no.

As for rebuilding that line has been used for the past 3 or 4 years and its getting old to be honest.

We have to realise that the way things are right now we are a midtable side at best. Our best players are not performing and everyone outside our first 11 is simply not good enough which isnt necessarily their fault as theyve not been given enough opportunities. Things carry on like this cant see Fernando sticking around past January.

It was a weird season that, but they were pretty lucky with injuries that season. Everyone said about Gerrard and Torres both being out for ages, but think when I looked at it at the time there was only game that they both didn't play in.

I say weird season, as Liverpool were actually playing really good football week in, week out for the first few months (even when some results didn't go their way), but then midway through it turned and went back to being more "efficient" in a lot of games with good performances more sporadic.

That sounds a bit derogatory there, but what I mean by good football was free-flowing attacking football, whereas the even the most successful years under Houllier and Benitez have been more based on defence and possession first.

Re: Signings,

I think that the Jovanovic for free is the kind of signings you've needed to strengthen the squad, especially with tight funds as he seems an alright player. Although now he's been pushed pretty much into the starting 11.

Brad Jones was obviously just because he's a "homegrown" player, which freed up a squad place. He is horrendous but at £2.5million and unlikely to play it's not really a defining signing. This has got to be down to Benitez for not preparing his squad in preparation of the rules coming in.

Christian Poulsen, is a good player, not world class or anything but will definitely do a job at £4.5million.

Raul Meireles, I really don't know anything about him but this is one that strikes me as slightly similar to Aquilani, as in digging your heals in to get the best bid on the outgoing player (Alonso/Mascherano) you've been left with what players are available and left and also with little time to negotiate.

The problem is though these have ended up effectively being replacements for Mascherano and Alonso, rather than being additions to the squad.

Crouch and Keane leaving under past few season under Rafa with no replacements was absolute madness aswell.

If anybody was unfortunate enough to see it, you would agree that if Lucas or Babel ever pull on a red shirt again it would be a disgrace.  Sadly they both will because we have no choice.
I'm not 100% sure but I don't think Poulsen is allowed to or capable of a pass forward.. Confused

Just looked on Twitter as follow Ryan Babel since I kept laughing at the random comments he'd made (although I have since never used or looked on Twitter).

Assuming it was their effort levels that were wrong last night, rather than ability then?

Sadly it was both. Sad What an occasion for a player like him to really turn it on though - against a 2nd (?) division side.  And he was ****e.  But far from alone in it.

I haven't lost faith!!!!! (yet), it’ll be all the more satisfying when they eventually pull their finger out. But Liverpool please pull it out soon! YNWA
