Is it all just one company now?

Ok, you have your Play, and CD Wow and all the American Companies...

But when I look at the UK companies selling DVDs online...

Sendit
The Hut
Zavvi
Asda
SelectCheaper
Dixons
Currys
Argos
PCWorld
Chipsworld
Lovefilm

It looks like they share the same ordering system, all have similar prices, and my guess is they operate from the same warehouse.

What happened to choice on the digital High Street?

Market Forces, the Thatcherite ideal in action. All those companies you listed use The Hut as a subcontractor for order fulfilment - except for Sendit, who have been genuinely taken over to double their warehousing facilities.

Whoever runs The Hut is chasing Play and Amazon as a jack-of-all-trades internet retailer, but I suspect they're doing a Tri-Ang (building a business empire on hot air and bank loans) and it may all end in tears.

They are pretty incompetent when it comes to pricing. If you're looking for misprices, their websites are the place to go. If you are looking for mis-prices to be honoured, then forget it.

I've placed around ten orders through them, eight mis-prices, two pretty fair sale prices.

I've had two items sent, eight orders cancelled from their end. It's a pretty naff shop that only offers you a one in five chance of buying something.

Tell me about it. Tongue They keep triggering low price alerts from Find-DVD, and Find-DVD automatically remove a title from your search when they alert you, so you check the title, find it's a misprice and have to reselect it on Find-DVD and set the target price lower than the misprice to continue monitoring it.

I contacted Find-DVD a while back to ask them if there was any chance of a blacklisting option on their site against certain retailers. They thanked me for my email and asked me if DVDReviewer wanted to be one of their site affiliates.

I received an email from the Hut on Saturday informing me that there was a 10% off discount valid for 2 hours, all you had to do was enter a code before proceding to checkout. the only problem was that having placed the DVD in my cart, signed in and selected the shipping address and payment details the only stage left was to confirm the order - nowhere to take the 10% off.
I emailed customer services and they said that it should work if I followed the link from their email (which I did) but they would credit my card with the 10% discount that I didn't get. So, a screw up at their end which they remedied, albeit a long way round.

They sort of sponsor some reviews on our site, but it's all gone a bit quiet of late. I used to send them an email when I hadn't heard from them for a while, but after a bit I got fed up of nudging them all the time. It's a pity as it allowed us to cover titles that distributors won't ordinarily send out, but a lot of the time the price would change between me starting and finishing a review (normally in the 'up' direction).

What happened to choice on the digital High Street?

ever since they closed the "real" high street, now all the online stuff is settling down to a similar price equilibrium. we used to walk down the high street looking for the best price + service, now almost everyone just buys online, so the competition has shifted.
