I've just popped into my local Blockie to see one of their shelf-gremlins sitting in the middle of a huge pile of ex-rental DVDs, swapping the "2 for £15" labels for pretty new ""£9.99 each, 2 for £18 or 3 for £25" ones. On the other side of the shop, there are ex-rental Blu-rays at "2 for £20", which includes a title that up to yesterday was £6.99.
At a time when most shops are droipping prices to attract customers, and most of the ex-rental titles are probably cheaper brand new online, what kind of half-wit increases prices?
Blockbuster Senior Management, obviously.

There's a Blockbuster round the corner from me, I used to look at the ex rental/2nd hand bin they have outside the shop if I was passing, but I don't bother now as I noticed a while ago their ex-rentals were more expensive than new from play/hmv 6 months after release.
I bought 2 of my first few DVDs from Blockbuster, 10 years or so ago, Bugs Life and Something About Mary, I think back then they were good value, as about 1/2 the price of the high street, and 2nd hand was a bit cheaper than play.com (or play 247 as it was then).
Also, the other thing about ex-rentals is sometimes you don't get any extras

I sometimes pick up movies-I-should-see as bargain bucket jobs - where the extras don't really count. The last time I looked in Blockie was for a bargain bucket copy of Indy 4 on DVD to do a detailed assessment of how much better the Blu-ray was over the DVD (the DVD is like watching the movie wearing glasses with fingerprints all over them in comparison). I wanted to do it as cheap as possible, but Blockie wanted £5 for a single disc ex-rental that probably looked like it had lost a fight with an orbital sander whereas I could get the 2-disc copy brand new from Play for just 99p more.

Well, they've done it again, and completely written themselves out of my little book of suppliers. All the stock in the 3 for £15 bracket has been upped to 3 for £18. That's £6 a pop for titles that are around that price brand new online, not looking as if they've been sandblasted.
What with the parking congestion and speed demons the store brings to our street (the branch is at the corner), I hope the whole outfit is out of business by Christmas.

I think its only a matter of time until theydo go out of business in the UK. Their DVD pricing policy has always been terrible, and I never felt their rental prices were that competitive.

I rarely pop in to Blockbuster, and if I do it's only out of curiosity. I've stopped renting since 2000, and I think the last time I bought a DVD there was a few years back when they had a sale.
