DVDSoon.com - Import costs will apply as from yesterday, 22nd December 2003

Mostly Harmless

I've just read in alt.media.dvd that someone contacted DVDSoon to see if it was true about their £12.99 tag on all their dvds so it passes customs.
Well customs have been in contact with DVDSoon and as of yesterday, 22nd December 2003, they have to declare the correct value of all their items, so you are likely to be charged customs if anybody had recently ordered anything from them.
If anybody can confirm this as I'm just repeating what was said in the newsgroup so it might not be true.

if it comes in thru belgium as it has been, it is possible it wont, since its part of the eu it is assumed the VAT is already paid.

that's my own understanding anyway.

DVD Soon now putting exact details on package

I just got my Blue Crush DVD from dvdsoon.com (30th Dec) and it's the first time they've ever put the exact contents (including the DVD title) and exact price on the outside of their jiffy bag instead of their usual $12.00 CAD (with no clue as to how many discs are inside). And, no, Blue Crush was a cheap disc so under the 18 quid customs limit and I wasn't charged import duty etc.

It looks like folks will have to stick to being under 18 quid ($41 CAD) in total if ordering from DVD Soon if they want to avoid import duty/VAT/PO handling (yes there can be up to THREE charges !). DVD Soon have claimed that they will also be stopping free shipping (last day was 31st Dec), but a quick checkout test today (1st Jan) shows that they're still doing it free for me, but that might change tomorrow when they're back in work !

Footnote: I tried putting 2 DVDs in my DVD Soon basket and checking out - is it just me or do they actually "deduct" $7.98 CAD for the free shipping when the shipping actually costs $4.98 CAD? Happy A bug perhaps?

they have been listing all items in the pakcage with me since january or so of 2003, but always listed the items as $12CAD

out of interest, was your package shipped through belgium or direct from canada?

You may want to try an order with dvdpacific, as I have just received a small parcel from them, with about $80 of DVD's, without any customs issues - Printed on the side of the box as $20 Software!

Oh, and it took only 4 days to get to me, including the weekend!

Thanks dvdpacific!! Happy

Just thought I'd post a reply I got from DVDSoon re their change in labelling policy.

Dear Sir;

We have been contacted formally by multiple customs offices world wide requesting that we correct our ways. Unfortunately we do not wish to remove our service to our international customers so we have no choice but to conform to their standards. At this time they are monitoring all parcel from our company. We do apologize for this action and ensure you that this is not intentional.

Yes, you guessed it those bandits at HM Treasury have presumably terrorised our favourite DVD Etailer. If any of Gordon's apparachniks are reading this I salute them with both fingers!
