I restored my dell computer to factory condition and forgot to backup my files

I restored my dell hybrid to factory condition tonight and it formatted the c drive - its running vista.  I thought I made a backup of my files on an external drive but I didn't - is there any free software out there that can help me get my files back?  Failing that is there any software that I can buy that will help me easily recover my files?
Best Wishes
Dan

To be honest, I don't think you have much chance, but you should not do anything on that PC as you rish overwiting the data you want to recover.

There are companies which can do that for you, I've never used one, but they're aimed more at  businesses so may be very expensive.

a few pieces of software I've seen linked to before but have never used:

Most programs for home users seem to be quick fixes for if you delete a file, but I think the above can be used after formatting.

I would advise against you using "TestDisk" - purely because it's pretty technical and (with no offence intended) I don't think you're up to using that.

Recuva however, is much more user friendly and will give you a chance at recovering some files.

But as Al has said, you should not be using the PC at all to avoid the risk of over-writing more files.
You should really take out the hard drive and try to recover files from another machine.

At least you'll now learn about how important backing up files is.

It won't help if he's formatted the drive though! Still, I always recommend having a Linux handy...Happy
