There are two types you can pick nowadays; ones where you connect them to your laptop via USB and others that are referred to as MiFi which act as a wireless hotspot that any wifi enabled device can connect to.

Both can be bought as either pre-pay or pay monthly. The dongle alone isn't enough to access the internet, you need a to buy a data allowance.

thanks, is it expensive to browse the internet and how do you buy the data, is it like a phone top up voucher?

I;m using a table with a three mobile 3G 3gb per month pre-pay sim card in it.
The same card would would work in an unlocked dongle or mi-fi.

Its available for under £20 for a 3gb per month, 6 months pre-paid. (18gb total)
I have the 3months card.
It has worked faultlessly for me for the last 4weeks, I'm going to buy another soon then just replace the one I'm using now, its cheaper to buy another than to top it up.

More info here.
Here is a link for an unlocked mi-fi

Yeah, an android mobile & Nokia can be used as a wi-fi hotspot.
Don't know if an apple phone can do it, never wanted one so don't know.

Downside is you need a data plan on your mobile & its a real battery killer for the phone.
Some networks don't allow tethering (using a mobile to connect something else to the mobiles data plan)
