Hi folks,
A friend of mine is inexperiencing intermittent problems with his wireless connection. He was using the 'net one day when his wireless signal died, and it seems to stay that way for hours on end before it decides to work again, but usually only around for 10 minutes.
I had a look at his laptop the other day, and there doesn't appear to be anything weird happening with DNS settings etc. I also tried a different wireless channel, to no avail. There's no obstruction from the laptop to the router. The router does work consistently with a wired connection, and TalkTalk have said that there is no problem with the line. When the wireless signal is down on his laptop, no other device can connect wirelessly, either.
Anyway, this leads me to believe that there may be a fault with something in the router that sends out the wireless signal - it's a possibility to look at anyway. It just so happens I have a spare router here, but can someone tell me what I need to do to test the signal via the new router, aside from simply plugging it all into the phone line? I have no idea if I'll have to import any settings to the router, for example?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Don't suppose you've got an Android tablet, by any chance? There's a terrific wi-fi analyser on Android Market they were showing off on the Gadget Show that gives a graphic readout on signal strength. I use mine regularly for checking signal strength around the house.

Use inssider to test signal strength and other signals that could be interfering.
Things like cordless phones and microwaves can even affect it.

We will pay the price but we will not count the cost..

Thanks for the tips. I'll likely still check with a replacement router; any ideas on what I need to do to get that up and running?

Pretty much nothing more than the login name and password for your ADSL. The rest of it is auto configuring!

Well, I've just spent the last couple of hours trying to log into the router's settings, with no luck. The default login is supposedly Administrator / (blank), but I can't log in with that. I tried a full reset of the router, and I still can't log in. None of the usual combinations like admin / admin or admin / password work either.
When I wire it up to my desktop PC, I can connect with my SSID etc, but there's no internet access available, which is why I wanted to look in the settings.
