clip art advice

i am looking for a selection of clip art to use in making cards. i need a variety of images but mainly vintage images(victorian etc...) i have found many sites but they always seem to have links which take you somewhere else. i will pay if i have to, but i don't know where i should go. i will be using them in a commercial sense so i need to make sure they can be used. that seems to be an issue with websites i have been on for clip art, there is a lot of info to go through. i have got a bit lost, going round in circles so to speak.

cheers.

Look on stock photography sites such as istockphoto.com and dreamstime.com - they have a variety of illustrations but you need to buy the appropriate license if using them on cards - make sure you do this properly - it may be expensive but otherwise could land you in big trouble.

many thanks for the advice. thats what i thought from checking a few sites, some were expensive for the rights, but to be honest there were some very good sites, having some victorian type images which is what i am after. just have to have a good look to see if it is possible to purchase, i wanted to avoid getting a clip art disk, i would rather get better quality than quantity.

cheers

hi. bit of an update/more info needed please.

having used my own images for my work i am finding i need to expand a little. i started up last year, i wanted to start small and build up, seeing how i went on/what demand there was etc.... well i am finding that i need more choice in the images i use. this means i need to take the next step and purchase some. having looked briefly last year when i originally posted i had an idea were to start, but having spent a good few hours over the last few days i need some advice. there is just so much and to be honest although i need to upgrade my approach if you like i don't want to get caught out or spend more money than i need to or have....

i will need a fair few images, i just don't know which option will suit me better, one that involves pay as you go or paying a monthly fee to a site to use the images. i was looking for dvd roms with images but i don't know if any are available. i need to be able to use the images to sell/commercial i think, as i do cards and some bags.

i need to decide on something quite soon. any help would be most appreciated. cheers.

Hi again, another site I use is graphicriver.net which has a large selection of images at good prices. I buy quite a lot of stock photos for websites etc and always use pay as you go, some of the subscriptions are a fortune I'd doubt you'd be buying enough to make use of it, especially as you'd said you wanted to go for quality not quantity.

As I'd said originally, just make sure you purchase the appropriate license and since they're for print, at the correct resolution (300 dpi I'd guess you're printing at?) if they're not vector graphics.

Let me know if you need any more help.

thanks for the link. i have had a look. i make greeting cards so would need images to either use untouched or altered slightly etc....basically images that i can work with, or use as they are if they are what i want. on the graphicriver site the only place i could find images was at the bottom of the homepage, called photodune. is this the right place i should be looking? also the prices are in dollars, is this right too? sorry for the questions, i just don't have any experience here, and i don't want to make costly mistakes. i will need a few images, i don't know exactly, i guess it depends on how i make up the cards.

many thanks, cheers.

Yes Photo dune have images too, as well as my previous links to istockphoto and dreamstime which have larger selections.

They're American sites hence the dollar prices but it'll convert when you pay Happy
