phone upgrade imminent

next month to be precise.

currently have an HTC desire (repaired once, then replaced with a newer model)
on a 600mins / unlimited texts / 500MB internet allowance for £31 a month on Voda.

the plan that i have suits me fine as i only use about 300 ~ 350mins, about 200 texts
and approx 300MB of my internet allowance.

so, with that in mind, not looking at paying more than £35 a month for my next term.

i've looked at the iPhone 4, but most networks still want a minimum of £70 up front
and £35 / month for what is now a "last generation" phone.

i'm not considering an iPhone 5 due to the anticipated high prices / minimum call allowance
that will no doubt launch with it.

that leaves me with my conundrum, what phone to get?

i've looked at the Samsung Galaxy super AMOLED phone, but it feels like a toy and
will probably break in my pocket. the HTC sensation looks superb, but i'm not sure it's
that much better than my current desire, and the current Sense UI is apparently
locked?

this leads me to Windows 7 phones.... are they any good for the average consumer?
are there any which are better recommended than other?

any advice will be greatly appreciated Happy

Today I upgraded my phone to a Blackberry Torch 9800.  Not necessarily what you're looking at, but I thought I'd mention it anyway...

If it was me, Id upgrade to the most expensive (prob iphone 4) , sell it and use the cash to upgrade to the 5 when available....that is assuming ur happy with the HTC in the meantime?

O2 offered me a 16Gig iphone 4 with 900 mins and unlimited texts for £23 pm but data had to be bolted on for another £7.50.

Told them CPW were doing sim only £18/1500 mins/unl text/1gig data but it didn't sway them any further... all they had to do was include the data and even reduce the texts to keep me there.

Call ended with my PAC code and I'm now deciding which of my phones I will keep my number on.

There is a new version of the sensation out net week I think. The XD. It comes loaded with Dre Beats music thingy and with some Beats in ear headphones. The duel core processor has been upped from 1.2 to 1.5 thingys. Has a bigger battery too that HTC claim will solve that issue. Phones4u have it on exclusive at £36 pm. No plans posted yet. The others won't be far behind. Then the price will drop a bit. The other knock on is the the normal Sensation will have to drop in price, and quite quickly.

I also belive the is another HTC Beats is on the way. Called the Bass. That is only tentative though.

hmmm, hadn't heard of that one doc.

i've got another 3 weeks left on this contract, so i'll probably see it out
until november to see what else is available. the sensation does look
good though...... my only worry with being an "early adopter" with the XD
is the teething problems you can sometimes get.

as mentioned, i'm effectively on my 3rd desire now, i got my first one within
weeks of them being released and my first lasted about months before it
started doing the infamous re-boot / overheating shenanigans. second one
lasted another 4 or so months before doing the same. hopefully (fingers crossed)
my 3rd phone will be ok... it's a Chinese built model (according to the serial no.) which
are apparently more robust than the taiwanese models.

**edit** this must be the one you mentioned doc.. the XE :

I bought the sensation when it was released. I have had no problems with it, its been an awesome phone.

I would advise getting a casemate tough cover to protect it.

I regularly get 12hrs plus use on one charge.

The only complaint I have about it is I keep picking it up to fondle it Tongue

I paid £499 for mine as I bought it sim free as didnt want the junk companies put on them.

I think the UI is unlocked now

A wee nugget of info that may become relevant to someone some day....
CPW (and I think their subsidiaries) phones' are unlocked when sold.
I think the iPhones are network locked (don't quote me on that though) but something like 99% of their phones are unlocked due to not being affiliated to a single network.

I bought a Samsung J900 as a present a couple of years ago, came with an O2 sim and £10 credit but was unlocked so the tenner was used and the other sim (T Mobile iirc) went back in.

My pre 3 is from that mobiles dot co dot uk place, unlocked.

Doesn't matter if contract or PAYG so definitely worth asking at POS.
