I thought an ADSL Microfilter was just an ADSL Microfilter, that little bit of plastic that you have to plug into your phone socket to make broadband work.
I knew vaguely that you get what you pay for, especially after getting broadband and realising that I needed 2 more in addition to the 2 that BT supplied. I went for the cheapo option and got a couple of Philex things from B & Q, which instantly cut my broadband speed by half.
That time I fixed matters by ripping out two phone sockets, getting a cordless phone with three handsets to make up for it, and sticking to the BT supplied microfilters. I live over a mile from the exchange and happily get half the 8MB max that is advertised.
Anyway, on Sunday, one of the filters gave up the ghost, started disconnecting my broadband whenever the phone rang. So it was off to get a new filter. Just for consistency, I got two, and this time rather than go cheap, I shelled out for a name that I had heard of. Belkin Pro Microfilters. They must be good, because they weigh more than the BT ones (which in turn weighed more than the Philex crap).
I plugged them in, and my Broadband speed shot up by half a megabit. So moral of story. Don't be miserly with your microfilters.
Just a public service announcement.

Have you also looked at the BT faceplate that effectively cuts your bell wire? (Which can cause interference and therefore reduce your speeds).
That was sorted when the broadband was installed. And last year, an engineer came and changed the socket completely. That's the only problem with BT Broadband. I know when the problem is at there end, that their exchange needs a good kicking, but they always follow procedure, and send an engineer to check connections at my end first, before kicking said exchange.
On the bright side, that does mean that I get my home wiring checked on a regular basis.

The new NTE 2000 is supposed to be very good, replaces your exisitng master socket (NTE5) it has the microfilter built in to it.
There is one aftermarket version, think it is called Austin Taylor, that is based on the NTE 2000, but also provides all the filtering for your extension sockets so no need for additional microfilters.
Only disadvantage to these is your router must be plugged in to the master socket.
All the best
Gerald.
