Linux Mint 11 “Katya” released! (May26th 2011)
I accidentally installed it the other day!
a couple of days after it was release, i started to mess with my /etc/apt/sources.list to upgrade, then realized I was on 9 so didn't know whether to go to 10 then 11, straight to 11, or just do a clean install, so thought I'd have a think about it before doing it, wait to a weekend.
mid week, I did
sudo apt-get update just before bed
wondered why it was taking a while, then thought, that's odd, it's downloading a lot of files, then realised I must have saved my sources.list mid tinkering! oops, following morning wouldn't start, tried loads of things, spent less time on the install from DVD than I did with the trying to boot into different kernels, safe modes etc! Install probably took 20 mins or so.
Glad I have a separate partition for /home as it's not really much bother to do a fresh install, just had to reinstall a couple of apps.
Anyway, as expected so far so good.
Using the "Experimental" nvidia driver, as using the driver manager I tried adding the proper recent one a few times, and it never seemed to "take" always said installed, but not in use. Experimental seems happy so far, but haven't tried a game yet.
Gnome 2 is fine, when trying to fix the broken 9/11 Mint kde/lxde/gnome hybrid I created I was looking things up in the openSUSE install using Gnome 3, and on the laptop in Unity, and I just prefer this plain simple but fast, proper menu in proper place, I can pin favourites to it, to the panel, on the desktop, and it works properly, and not too shabbily ![]()
So basically, another good, solid distro, not necessarily worth an upgrade, but no regrets yet ![]()
I'll be interested to see what happens with the other Mint 11 WM/DE versions, possibly KDE, like XFCE and LXDE will be based on Debian.
ppl who use the debian based ones seem to like them, so I wonder if although they said it won't, if 11 main Gnome will go debian based, or if it doesn't how long it will stick to gnome 2, or go unity or gnome 3 when they're "finished" ![]()
Hey you're a bit late with this! ![]()
Hearing lots of good things about Mint 11. I'm unlikely to try it, mostly because me Suse/Gnome 3 setup is so bloody good. Have you had any cosmetic problems with it, like the Ubuntu problem of the theme randomly changing to the default Gtk2 one? Let me know, and let me know how you get on the Nouveau driver too. ![]()
One thing I've never done is set up a separate /Home partition. The reason I haven't is because instead I have a separate FAT32 partition where I store all my stuff that I want to keep, and I can share that easily across all my installed operating systems. I didn't much see the point in setting up a separate /Home partition when I use this in this way, which seem to me to work much the same way. Do you think I should still set up a separate /Home partition?

Do you think I should still set up a separate /Home partition?yes, I have 2 physical hard drives
sda has 3 partitions
XP install
games for XP install
Files
sdb has
swap
mint /
mint home
opensuse
Files2
Files3
the Files partitions are ntfs, but openSUSE and Mint have no problems read or writing to them with default setups, I know some distros I've tried I've had to go through the pain of setting up fstab properly with ntfs-3g to get the write to work properly.
as I say, having a home partition is great, it's been useful on the laptop as well, when I've messed things up, it means you have the convenience of doing a fresh install as an upgrade, even if you switch distros, you can usually say where home is, and it will use it
So backup ~/.mozilla and ~.thunderbird etc just in case, install new OS and new reconfiguring Firefox or thunderbird ![]()
So far no cosmetic problems with Mint, I've just left it on the default silvery mint one, haven't even changed the wallpaper to plain black which I usually do straight away!
The only thing that annoys me is, that in MS Windows, you can have 2 explorers or (any other windows) click on the task bar, and do tile vertically, I think IceWm i sthe only WM to do that. I can live with opening 2 nautilus windows, and manually moving them side by side, but I'm getting annoyed with moving it to the top right hand side and it being maximized automatically
If I wanted to maximize it, I'd double click on the window top, or select maximize from the window menu, or click the maximize button. I'm guessing I can turn that off but I haven't looked yet.
I don't have as many partitions as you, and only one internal drive (though I do have an external back up drive). My set up is:
Win 7
FAT32 files back up
Linux
Linux
Swap
I tend to manually back up things like emails, though they're often not important enough to warrant backing up, so I end up starting a fresh inbox every six months or whenever I install a new main distro. I just keep the few I think I'll need backed up on the spare partition, and then move the more important stuff onto my external drive and burn it to DVD etc for extra paranoia. ![]()
I like the look of the Mint Debian edition. I'm using a Debian spinoff called Zenix, which I posted up earlier (you might remember), and it's been absolutely brilliant. Maybe Mint DE would be a good choice for the Eee...

I changed my theme after you posted, and not had any problems at all.

regular desktop, watching divx/xvid, mkv files no problems at all,
however I just had a go on openarena, and although it was really fast when running, it was really flickery, with redraw, even if I was standing still, the image was flickering, hard to explain what I could see, but almost like I could see it drawing the bit behind the walls i could see v briefly.
maybe I need to tweak things as from a quick Google it "should" work fine. Not as bad as GTAIV in XP where I drive through roads sometimes!
That's pretty impressive actually. Hopefully by the time Wayland hits, the Nouveau driver will be ready for the big time and I won't have to worry any more.
Also, it sounds as though they've managed to fix the gnome-settings-daemon problem that's plagued Ubuntu since 10.10, and causes the theme to change to the default Gnome one. This bug was a real PITA for me, and when I saw it in Natty it just about sealed my distro-hopping status. If Mint have fixed it, they ought to pass the fix to Canonical!
Linux Mint 11 LXDE released!
Only 32 bit version so far, so I'll stick to gnome one for time being on main PC, although it does have some annoying bugs I've never had before ![]()
Very occasionally if I click on X to kill an app in top right hand corner, it closes the window behind it instead
Haven't looked into it to see if it's just me, or a proper bug, or if I should report it.
Also I still get annoyed if I have 2 nautilus opened, and I want t have 1 in right half of screen, 1 in left, it often thinks by moving it into a conrer I want to maximise it, I don't, i'd click maximuse or doubel click title bar if I did
In fact if Gnome/KDE/LXDE had tile windows vertically like MSWin9x onwards has it wouldn't be an issue
I think IceWM in Absolute Linux is only Linux I've seen that functionality ![]()
may put mint 11 lxde on laptop since the ubuntu install I added lxde as I hated Unity.
I think Gnome 2 will really start to feel crocked before too long. It was already causing me some issues on Ubuntu 10.10 last year, some of which I've mentioned here, and that won't get better in the long run. There's an effort to fork Gnome 2 with a project called MATE, but my personal feeling is it's probably time now to either move to KDE or Gnome 3, or really give Xfce a go.
I thought Unity was ....ok I suppose, but it needs a bit of work to just get it out of your face imho. It's pretty enough though, and has some potential. Natty was really a very early snapshot of what it will be in time to come I reckon.
But can I use it now? No. ![]()
I do think that the Mint team ought to keep an eye on it, because I could imagine them making a nice job of the Mint Menu on the Unity dash.
Mint is Number 1 now!

My real reason for posting was this interesting statement from them about what's coming up regarding gnome
http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1851
looks interesting, clearly a lot of work and thought is going into it.
I've seen this about Mint. They had to do something, and I suppose they made a good choice here to tailor the Gnome Shell, though I have to admit that screenshot isn't very impressive. Do they still have an Ubuntu base then, or have they moved to Debian?
Don't put much stock in Distrowatch rankings personally. It's never been a reflection of user base, and I wouldn't ever be put off from using a distro if it was say, 14th on DW. It means little. I'm not surprised to see Ubuntu losing it's place though. It's becoming a competing OS now rather than a Linux distro, and Linux beardies won't like that. Eventually it may become to Debian what Apple is to BSD (it's a possibility), at which point it'll probably be removed from there altogether!
