Can`t install any version of .net framework

TRied to tun 3DMark11 but after some error messages and some googling, it appears that my .net framework is buggered. This may also me related to various other niggles I'm experiencing (Catalyst for AMD won't install correctly).

I've complete;y removed all traces of .net and tried to reinstall, but it won't take, not even with a standalone install. The error log gives this:

Oh wow, I had this once in XP, it was a total nightmare trying to reinstall .NET. It just wouldn't let me. I forget how I finally fixed it, but it may have involved deleting a registry entry.

well so far, I don't think I have anything that really needs it, apart from 3dmark. I just know somewhere down the line it's going to stop me doing something really important

I've never known so many issues from a clean build as you're having Pete and seeing as it's so new, I'd be inclined to start again...

Is this .net removal tool any help?

Supposed to get rid of all hidden traces of .net so you can do a clean install.

I had a problem with Windows update before telling me updates had failed, in teh end got around it by emptying the temp folders in c:\windows

you're not wrong. I'm thinking it stems from that failed ubuntu installation. Mind you, all the problems I've been getting appear to be common.

EDIT. All partitions re-merged. Backed up everything to my slave HDD. Probably going to lose My GTAIV save files, but I hadn't got that far anyway. Going to do a complete re-install tomorrow. Should I remove my new Graphics card before I do so or won't it matter? (hope not, getting it in was a bloody chore)

All done. Net is installed, plus a problem I was having with catalyst seems to have been resolved too. Looks like my first install didn't go as well as I'd thought...
