As I mentioned in my Galaxy S thread, I'm not a big mobile person. I've never had a contract as I use my phone mainly for incoming calls from recruitment agencies, but since I now have a smartphone I figured I should probably get some sort of deal that allows mobile internet, with texts and calls a bonus. I was looking at Orange (my provider of over ten years) and their deals seem pretty poor, especially for mobile internet. Virgin (who supply my TV/broadband) are even worse.
I came across that Giffgaff site that was mentioned on here a while back and it seems far more reasonable, but I'm slightly confused as to how it all works. They mention call charges per minute etc., but then they have packages with inclusive minutes. The mobile internet says it's only unlimited until the end of March, but then there appears to be a clause that says it carries on if you're on a certain package.
I guess what I'm saying is I'm a lazy sod who would like someone to tell me what the best current SIM only deal is without me having to wade through every provider's site. I assume I can port my number to whatever network I choose, so that's not a problem (although the Mrs does have me as a Magic Number on Orange). I just want the cheapest deal I can get with a decent voice/data/text allowance. I've got away with hardly ever topping up for years, but I don't mind paying a bit for the freedom of being able to access the web wherever.
Please help!

No idea what Giff Gaff is but I've just binned a T-Mobile contract (as their customer service is total crap) and switched to a Simm only deal.
Providing your a 'low user' which I am.
Talk mobile from the Carphone Warehouse which actually uses the Vodafone network.
100mins, 100 texts and 100mb internet.
£5.11 per month on a rolling 30 day contract.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what 'it' was.
Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary

You get a set number of mins for calls, 250mins, & unlimited texts & web.
Any goodie bag of £10 or more & you will get the unlimited texts & web![]()

With giffgaff you can choose to pay for minutes and texts as you go (call and text rates are very cheap) or you can buy monthly package deals with inclusive mins, texts and mobile web (known as Goodybags)
e.g a £10 goodybag will currently get you 250mins, unlimited texts and unlimited moblie web.
Until April 4th mobile web is free - they had been doing this for a while but sadly it's coming to an end.
Additionally you can call anyone else on giffgaff free as long as you top-up at least once every 3 months.
Edit: pat beat me to it...

Ah right, so the unlimited web thing is definitely ending then? That's a real shame as I was seriously contemplating it. Looks like it's back to the drawing board... This is the bit that confused me though, as it seems to contradict the main page:

Free Mobile Internet:
You lucky giffgaff pioneers can even enjoy free UK mobile Internet up to the 31 MAR 2011. After that date, mobile Internet will be charged at 20p a day (if you use less than 1MB/day you'll pay less than 20p and if you go over 20MB you'll be charged extra at 20p/MB). But all our goodybags that include unlimited Internet will continue including unlimited Internet after the 31 MAR 2011.

I have a SIM only deal on 3 for my iPhone 4.
£5 a month for 1GB of data a month (although when looking at my allowance pages it shows 2GB).
That's on a 30 day rolling contract.
No calls/ texts included, but I have a Blackberry provided by work which I use for those.
Do they do the rolling tarrifs now?
Seemed to be when I looked into it about 7months ago, I'd have to update a new goodybag every month.
Couldn't be arsed with that, as would forget to do it some months ![]()
My current contract with T-Mobile Sim only that I got anyway seems to be comparable anyway
£10 per month, 500mins, unlimited texts, unlimited internet (3GB). 12month contract though.

Giffgaff data is uncapped and unlimited so should be good for a heavy mobile web user. I've never tested it to destruction though. I wonder what they'd do if you really spanked the data use.
I did check to see whether they were considering a data only goodybag (I had thought this was in the pipeline) but it looks like it's something they are not keen on offering.
