Problem connecting monitor

I'm stumped with this one, Spent Saturday afternoon upgrading my spare pc (Dell Dimension) for my parents as theirs died.
All data transfered ,windows xp updated all working fine.
Parents picked it up yesterday got it home and connected it up to their monitor (HP lcd), switched it on and .................................. the monitor just displays the message "no input signal monitor going to sleep" but the pc continues to boot up.
I had the bloody thing working on my monitor and my parents have tried the input select button on their monitor.
Can anybody think of something i've over looked ?.

Resolution set too high? (But would expect you to see boot up screens...)

The cable is in place as it should be. as for graphics card i'll have to check that as they will not attempt to look in side without me being there.

Most common reason for this fault when I was in store was a bent pin in the monitor cable.
Obviously if it's an LCD with a cable able to separate then there are two ends needing checked.

this is allways my downfall Happy  i'll repair/reinstall/build a pc for someone, & it'll auto set to 1920x1600 as per my monitor,  & i ALLWAYS...forget to drop the res back to a lower default,  meaning i get a phone call late at night from my mate/family member asking why it's not working lol..

do they get the bios message? if they get that then tell them to keep hitting f8 just after that to get into safe mode, i think there you can set res for normal boot.
