X Box wireless question

My lads just ordered himself an Xbox with his b'day money.
If he wants to play online do we need an adaptor or is wireless access built in.

If we do need one any pointers to the best deal would be appreciated.

Now, what I'm with isn't it, and what's 'it' seems weird and scary

wifi is a bone of contention for 360 users, unfortunately you need the official add-on, & it's around £50 Sad  (last time i checked, might be a bit cheaper now)

It does not have in built wifi you need to get an adapter unless you are going to run an ethernet cable.

Not sure what deals are around they do not seem to drop in price very often. Best bet unless you have an n capable router the older non N version of the adapter maybe a little cheaper or look for a second hand one even they fetch about £30 I believe.

GameGears have an old non n model for £40 not sure about the company though not used them before myself.

Play have it for £45

if you're fairly tech savvy, you can buy a "wireless gaming bridge" for around £30.
these connect to the xbox 360's ethernet port and require their own power supply
but work just as well as the official adaptor.

for ease of use and installation though, the M$ wifi adaptor wins hands down.

For a temporary solution you can bridge it through a wireless enabled laptop (if you've got one handy).
