iPhone Data Usage...

I'm currently paying £9 a month for unlimited calls and unlimited texts with Vodafone but it doesn't include any data. I'm hoping to buy an iPhone in Jan so my data usage is going to jump massively. I can add 500Mb a month for £7.50 or 5Gb for £15.

I know no one can answer this question exactly but if i'm just going to be using it for google maps, general web browsing, emails and a few information apps (train times/ sky+) is 500Mb going to be enough? I may occasionally stream some video on the train if I've forgot my laptop but as the signal on trains is so hit and miss this probably won't happen.

Does anyone here keep track of their data usage and what do you do on your iPhone?

Cheers

Ross

Not sure where to look to find out about data usage on my iphone to date...I imagine without the streaming video content you'll be fine unless you get huge amounts of emails and in any event the iphone seems to restrict the emails received to a few kb unless you opt to view the whole thing which saves you from being all "junked out". If you have a "keen" interest in streaming, which could happen once you get into the iphone a bit deeper then why not chose one of the providers that offers "unlimited data" if you are worried. I don't imagine for one minute you'll get a free 16gb 3gs iPhone from Voda so it will be a new contract effectively anyway so i'd consider another provider maybe? Ther was a contract cost comparison article over on MSE recently iirc.

Data usage is the reason I've stuck with O2 for my iPhone, unlimited web use instead of unlimited wi-fi as Vodafone do.
If you know anyone with a Vodafone mobile dongle for Broadband you could find out just how much you'll use it for £15 by topping up theirs and running it as a test to see how much data is transferring on the pages you view, the VF program is good at showing that on the left side of the window.

Was also told by a friend on VF they have a thing similar to O2's bolt on that unlimited web is a fiver a month? He has it on his PDA on VF so may be worth a look at.

How did you get unlimited calls n texts for a tenner? Is that a bolt on thing on a contract cos that's brilliant and would make me move my taxi phone.

i have the "unlimited" web bolt on with my o2 contract, & have never gone anywhere near it's limits, web surfing/youtube etc never used more than 100meg in a month.

To check your data usage I think its Settings -> General -> Usage

The unlimited calls and texts for £9 is a Corporate tariff but I left the company over a year ago hence the reason I can't just phone them up and ask for an upgrade as they might take it off me! Tongue I can email them and ask them to change my contract but when I phone them up they ask for my personnel number!

I don't mind paying a lot for the phone as it's a taxable purchase so I can in theory get it through work for ~£280 based on the current PAYG Orange & O2 prices.

£16.50 a month for unlimited calls/texts and 500Mb is my prefered option else I'm going to be tied into an 18/24 month contract at £35 quid a month.

I noticed though on the VF website that even their monthly tariffs come with a 1GB usage limit...

My monthly (corporate) Vodafone tariff is limited to 500MB (or so I was told).
I think the company pays around £30 a month for it (no idea what's included, but I suspect bugger all).

They gave me a Blackberry with it, but I've just taken the SIM out of it and put that into my iPhone 3G
