I don't suppose you have or know anyone with a Mac do you Nick?
It's "Sync" application is pretty good at talking to most mobiles and can sync the contacts with the local "Address Book". Then you just tell it to sync with another phone (the Sony Ericsson).
I had similar issues with my old phone and spent ages trying to mess around with sync software and in the end found it was very simply done on my Macbook.
