Virgin Media - Any Good?

Thinking about swapping current service provider for BB & phone (BT Sad ) to Virgin. I'm thinking of the £14.99 package per month of phone and BB from Virgin (can't get virgin tv up here - middle of the countryside). Virgin's package is half of what we're paying at the mo for a so/so service from BT.

Anyone got any experience of Virgin Media good or bad?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

Grinning

Good and bad really. Thye were a lot better when they were Telewest, before NTL took over and rebranded as VM. As it is now, the broadband isn't what it used to be, especially on the lower packages, but it still beats most ADSL in terms of speed and reliability.

The downside with the all in one package for that kind of money is that you'll be on the lowest tier service, which I think traffic manages you after downloading 300MB of data between certain hours. If you only surf and grab the occasional file it's ok, but if you download/game etc then it might not be the best level of service to opt for.

Actually, can you clarify? Are you talking about VM cable services or ADSL? I just read the TV comment, so presumably you're on about ADSL? If so, don't touch it with a barge pole. It's awful, and when they traffic manage you it's for a week! Our R1 Editor/graphic designer is with them and he regularly goes down to dial-up speeds.! Their ADSL is a joke.

if you have an o2 mobile phone try there BB i got it free for a year with no tie in, so i run it alongside my virgin 20mb connection, the o2 line (adsl) is actually nearly 50% faster on upload Confused (tho obviously much slower on download) but at 0 cost i'm chuffed with it, i believe the normal price is 7.50 per month. but as i say, if you have an o2 mobile contract you should be able to get it free (+ free router free activation etc)

Thanks for the advice. According to thier website it's unlimited downloads (with a fair use policy) on Bundle 2

I think it's ADSL as we're not cable ready up here (in sunny Buxton!). Not too bothered about tv at the mo as we have sky. Was looking at Sky's package of tv, bb and phone also.

Unfortunately, i'm not with O2 - stuck with another colourful mobile provider

Thanks

the unlimited thing is a bit of a joke, there are other posts at dvdreviewer about it and at www.cableforum.co.uk/board. I've noticed that if I get in from work, and say download a Linux liveCD ISO, or something else 700mb+ it will dl nice and fast, but then I'll suffer if I ant to surf later on, as I'll have used up my "allowance".

Also, liek many companies their customer service is cr@p, I had problems for ages with my broadband, they sent engineers round my house, gave me a new modem, all sorts, turns out the cabinet at the end of my street was the problem, effecting the whole area!

What's more annoying is that I did get refunded for the individual days I had no internet, but I had to phone them up to tell them, and then they did it without quibble.

But saying all that, I have been with them for years, when it works it works well.

Yeah but that's the cable service. Just to reiterate - don't touch them for ADSL!!!

Tongue Same here really, migrated from BT/pipex on adsl to Telewest as it was then, service was much better then, never noticed ever any speed problems or downtime, since the clowns and bean counters at VM took over its a bloody lottery as to what my connection is like, dont get me wrong, it always works, but i think i had a 56k us robotics dial up modem that was faster sometimes.... on the whole tho i dont do mahoosive downloads etc just browsing and for chat so cant really complain too much... horses for courses, u get what you pay for i guess Tongue

On the whole I'm still very happy with cable broadband, and would recommend it in many cases, but damn, Telewest spoiled us. Sad

To second TheOgster, I've only heard good things about O2 ADSL.

VM's customer services are out-sourced shyte. Whenever I ring them now I just tell them I am ringing to cancel as you get put through to a UK call centre that way.
