vista basic?

Hi Guys

I am looking to buy a dell laptop, and they give you a choice of either XP or Vista Basic can anyone tell me as I have always used XP Home, How does vista basic compare to the XP system? Do you still get Outlook Express, and other usual attachments that you get with XP? I would imagine that XP will soon be obsolete so using Vista is the obvious choice?

Also consider Vista home premium instead of the Basic.
This sums it up fairly well

I've read that the Basic version will run on less memory (presumeably because of the non Aero interface).

If you look around the Dell site you'll see that they have very similar specced laptops on offer with the Premium version.

I'm making the same choice at the moment on a laptop for my daughter. I must admit I have a Vista Business equipped laptop, and I'm ALWAYS fighting it to get stuff installed - not having enough rights (but I'm set us as a administrator, WTF?), and some software won't run on Vista.

Thanks, this laptop is for my daughter as well, but I am very tempted to just get XP as its so user friendly!

Personally, I'm not going to touch vista until MS release their first service pack. Just like XP really, that was awful until they released SP2, I stuck with Win2K for years before taking on XP.

Give Microsoft a chance to iron out the bugs and also the software developers and hardware manufacturers need time to sort out drivers and software compatibility etc.

just my 2p's worth of course....
